The U.S. Anti-Doping Agency notified star U.S. sprinter Tyson Gay that he tested positive for a banned steroid, the BBC reported Friday.
Gay withdrew from the world championships and announced that he had tested positive for a banned substance in July. Gay's positive test could lead to a two-year suspension.
"We appreciate Mr. Gay taking responsibility for his decisions and for voluntarily removing himself from the World Championships. As this is an ongoing case we have no other comment at this time," USADA CEO Travis Tygart said in a statement Friday.
Gay holds the American record for the 100 meters when he ran it in 9.69 seconds in 2009.
