Michigan Panthers Bring in Pair of Pass Catchers, Immediately Place One on Injured Reserve

After the changes made to the quarterback room, the Michigan Panthers continued their focus on the passing game, adding a couple of pass catchers. Wide receiver John Hightower and tight end Nick Guggemos were signed to the team on Thursday. Guggemos was also placed on the injured reserve list with an unknown injury.

Hightower has been in training camp with the D.C. Defenders and was part of the first round of roster cutdowns on Sunday. His most recent stop in the NFL was with the Los Angeles Chargers in training camp last year. He also appeared in 13 games for the Philadelphia Eagles in 2020, hauling in 10 receptions for 167 yards.

In two seasons at Boise State, Hightower posted 82 catches for 1447 yards and 14 touchdowns, adding two rushing touchdowns and one kickoff return for a score. He was named to the Second Team All-Mountain West team in 2019 as a wide receiver and kickoff returner.

Guggemos was signed by the Buffalo Bills in mid-June last year but was released shortly afterward. He also had a stint with the Green Bay Packers. Guggemos played college ball at St. Thomas in Minnesota, where he made one catch for eight yards.

Hightower is a solid signing for the Panthers who already have some questions surrounding the passing game. He joins Devin Gray, Trey Quinn, Devin Ross and Jordan Suell as the top wide receivers.

The Panthers must cut the roster to 50 players by March 23.
