Snoop v. Jay Z

Today in the midst of Hurry-Up-And-Wait (Spartak Photo shoot), we began debating which rapper, between Snoop and Jay Z has the most classics. Now, I'm not talking about classics as in, "singles" -- or even #1 hits-sat at the top of the charts for 58 weeks. No. I'm talking about songs that when they come on EVERYBODY knows the lyrics. The songs that if they were a person, they'd be described as "iconic"...

So what do you think? Consider some of the facts:

JAY Z

Big Pimpin

Dirt off Your Shoulder

99 Problems

Can I Get A

Izzo (HOVA)

Change Clothes

Money Cash Hoes

Excuse Me Miss

Girls, Girls, Girls

Ain't No N***a

Jigga What Jigga Who

SNOOP

Drop It Like Its Hot

Ain't No Fun

Beautiful

Gin and Juice

I Just Wanna...

2 of Amerikaz Most Wanted

Nuthin' but a G Thang

Snoop Dogg (Whats my Name)

The Next Episode

Doggy Dogg World

B Please

Sue thinks Jay Z...but I think Snoop. Jay's list is...hot, but hardly known by everybody. Is this just me harboring a Westside bias???

I mean, Whats My Name, Nuthin but a G Thang, Ain't No Fun and Gin & Juice? C'Mon. Classics. Every single person at every frat party in America STILL knows the words to those songs.

Drop it Like it's Hot is probably the whackest song I've ever heard from a rapper I actually like. But it's tough. Jay's got the better flow, but Snoop's got staying power like no other in the game. Who else has been doing it as long as he has and still drops hits? But for your argument, I think you've got to go with Jay because he did all his damage in like half the time.

Wow... you really got me with this one! It's hard for me to choose, so I guess I'll have to say both of them are great in their own way.

ooooo, that's a tough one. even though im pretty sure you're showing your west coast bias here lol, im gonna have to agree and go with snoop. i mean that whole doggystyle album alone has jay-z beat in terms of classics IMO. i STILL listen to that cd, and i wasn't even into west coast music all like that back then. jay has some really good joints that i like, but back-in-the-day snoop wins hands down for me. now i don't know about some of his newer stuff...lol

mann..this is gonna be the one time i gotta disagree with you...jay all the wayy

SNOOP!

i gotta go with Jigga man hov

Depends on the age of the person. I'm 23, I remember Snoop when he was Snoop Doggy Dogg back at Death Row. You could write the entire album Doggystyle as a 'classic'. Dee, you forgot "Murder Was The Case". Snoop had Dre.

Jay-Z came up around '96, but I remember Vol. 2. Again, you forgot "Hard Knock Life". That was the sh** back in the day. So was "Anything". Jigga had Biggie in the beginning.

Snoop.

are you going to be at the midnight madness this week for uconn?

i looked at the list and i know more jay-z songs than snoop songs, but i like snoop better...his songs are more catchy

I'm with you on this one too Dee. I mean people may know bits and pieces of Jay-Z's songs, but when you play Snoop almost everyone knows those songs from beginning to end. I'm not trying to be bias either(I'm from Los Angeles and Jay Z is actually my favorite rapper), but it's something about Snoops' songs. Is it that they are easier to learn???

Well, I counted, and I knew four Jay Z songs, and three of Snoop's..so I'd have to go with Jay Z, lol.

i have to agree with sue. i know way more Jay Z then Snoop and so does everyone i know.

I'm from New Zealand (the last place on earth!), and Jay-Z is reasonably popular over here but not nearly as big as he is in the States. Snoop however, hasn't gone out of style since the days of the Chronic and 213. I only know 3 songs of the Jay-Z list, but could add 10 more classics to the Snoop list.

Snoop takin' it International! Hands down the winner.

(awesome topic by the way!)

Gotta go with Snoop -- sorry SueB.

What'smymuthaf***inname?!!!
Snoop doggy dooooooog!

jay z for sure!! sorry d haha

I'm from the west, but I still have to say Jay for sure.

Although this was my ish for the Summer:

Jay-Z by far.

I have to say Snoop!! Probably because he's one of my favorites but he just has those songs that everyone can sing to...everyone knows the words!! Jay-Z's songs are hot but I just have to go with Snoop D-O-GG!!!

ITS DEF JAY-Z BOO-BOO..........HIT ME UP ON MYSPACE AND WE'LL DISCUSS THIS FURTHER

I have to grudgingly admit that Snoop has more classics, but I think Jay wins on every point except that one.

The Doggfather!

Snizzle
with a sneeze on rev and the boys

That's an easy one - Jay Z!

What was Snoop doing when Jay owed the summer ,7 years straight? Snoop's last couple of cd's have been snoopy poo

TUPAC MAN !!!!! These cats cannot hold a candle to him.................

Jay Z no contest....

no way Diana Taurasi wrote this hahaha ok maybe she did but i'll go with 'YOUNG H.O.V from the mutha&^*&* R.O.C' lol

hater.

If I have to pick one I will go with Snoop

I like both these cats, but i am biased due to my ''EAST COAST'' love.

It's gotta be snoop. While he's certainly not as good as he once was he's been around awhile longer and had the help of the best producer of all time in Dr. Dre.

jays only better lyrically...snoops just better at everything else (oh n snoop got lyrics like a mothafuka too...dont let the smooth shit fool you) definite snoop on this one, his classics are known worldwide.

I look at Diana list for Jay-Z and it is all his new stuff...Jay-Z first album contained his huslter floe: "Can't Knock the Hustle", "Friend or Foe", "Ain't no Nigga", etc...one of the top rap albums ever. Then he followed that up with: "The City is Mine", "Who you Wit", etc. I know his later stuff is more pop than hustle, but Jay-Z has some of the ill-est flows and people who know rap KNOW his stuff. Sorry Diana, but i must give the nod to Jay.

The songs that you mentioned are from Snoops first CD. Those were hits, but after that he just couldnt get that magic back. Now Jay has been killing it. All i can say is when the media mentions Hip Hop Jay-z is the one they talk about.

they both suck...............Tupac

Hands down pac was the greatest

idk about the GREATEST bruh. This will always be an open debate LONG after you and i are gone.

true, but that's my vote.

u think so too Randy? to me,............ his words, ryhmes, style, and flow was so much more important than anything i have ever seen or heard, so deep.......

Snoop, all his 90's stuff is classic

Ditto on that comment WJ32.

Snoop fell off. Jay Z has been more consistent. Some of Snoop's songs are simply not good. Jay Z has more quality hits. My vote is for Jay Z.

Jay-Z is more consistent, I'll give you that. But the question was classic and consistency doesn't equal classics. Individual songs make classics, hits strung together form consistency. Yes, a person can have classics back to back, but I don't think Jay-Z has that to the point where he has more classics.

And in my opinion, Tupac is the greatest rapper of all time, and no one's argument can change my opinion.

that's definitely opinion bruh.

I know the way a nigga livin was whack.
But you don't get a nigga back like that!
Shit I'm a man with pride, you don't do shit like that
You don't just pick up and leave and leave me sick like that
You don't throw away what we had, just like that
I was just fu*kin them girls, I was gon' get right back
They say you can't turn a bad girl good
But once a good girl's goin bad, she's gone forever..
And more forever
Shit I gotta live with the fact I did you wrong forever
-Jay Z (Song Cry)

Check mate.

No question Snoop.

How about women rappers?

Missy E or Queen L ...

s n double o peeeeeeeeeeeeeee

Jay Z all the way. the man is a legend...plus he doesn't have to put out a whack reality tv show on E! lol

Ha ha!! Being a DJ and have been for a long time, I would say Jay-Z is better lyrically, but Snoop has the mainstream party bangers. So I guess that would depend on what you are into.

And yeah what about women rappers?

exactly. snoop has classics.

women rappers...topic to come
