Charles Manson Wanted To Meet Bray Wyatt After Seeing His Work In WWE

Pro wrestling has had many performers who were clearly inspired by real-life cult leaders, but it can be argued that none pulled off the cult leader persona in WWE quite as successfully as Bray Wyatt. In fact, Wyatt was so good at making the world believe he was a cult leader and that the Wyatt Family were his followers that one of the most infamous cult leaders in the world wanted to meet him.

Charles Manson Asked To Meet Bray Wyatt

That's according to former WWE writer Nick Manfredini. Manfredini worked closely with Wyatt in WWE and, during an appearance on the Wrestling with Freddie podcast, explained how Wyatt's work portraying a cult leader almost resulted in him paying a visit to Charles Manson in prison.

"Windham [Bray Wyatt]’s teammate, former college football teammate, became a prison guard at Charles Manson’s prison. Allegedly, this guy showed Manson the Bray Wyatt promos and he wanted to meet him," Manfredini revealed. "Mike Rotunda [Wyatt's father] knew about it, and I think he brought it up to somebody, I don’t know if it was Hunter or Vince or somebody, and they immediately squashed it."

WWE Wanted To Turn Wyatt's Manson Meeting Into A Network Special

You might think the reason the idea was squashed before it could even get any traction was because it involved a WWE Superstar going to visit a prolific convicted murderer in prison, but seemingly not. Since Wyatt had clearly pulled inspiration from Manson for his on-screen character, the idea of having him talk with the cult leader as part of a taped WWE Network special was raised, which is ultimately what killed the idea before it got off the ground.

It didn't end there for Manfredini and Wyatt, though. Despite the idea of an official meeting between Wyatt and Manson, which could have been spun into a Network special, being shot down, the writer kept pushing for them to go and meet Manson. "I was like, let’s just go. Next time we’re in Northern California, me and you, just put on a hat or something. Nobody will know it’s you. Let’s just go meet him."

That meeting never happened, and Manfredini adds that he realizes, in hindsight, it would have been a terrible idea to follow through with it. I'm honestly not so sure. Manfredini naturally knows Wyatt a lot better than I do, but he struck me as the kind of guy who would have loved to speak to Manson, someone he pulled inspiration from for his work in WWE. The meeting will now never happen as Wyatt tragically passed away suddenly at the age of just 36 in 2023.
