Will John Cena give the rub to Dolph Ziggler?: After a solid couple of years as everybody’s pick for the next big main eventer, Dolph Ziggler is set to break the proverbial “glass ceiling” and work a storyline with WWE’s top-dog John Cena. Naturally this is the next step in the AJ Lee scandal, which is being exposed by Vickie Guerrero on Raw. Ziggler has been given the opportunity to wrestle Cena at house shows on the European tour, and judging from fan accounts the pair are stealing the show. This series is likely a warm-up for the Survivor Series PPV, or a later bout. So far Cena has been booked to beat Ziggler on each leg of the tour, including France and over the weekend in Newcastle, England. It seems the company are still stuck in the mindset that booking Cena as invincible makes better business sense than putting over a younger talent. The feeling is that simply wrestling Cena will be enough to cement Ziggler as a top contender. If Dolph does get a victory in the future, it will likely be via some kind of cheating, although perhaps what makes most sense would be for the duo to have a long blow away match, where Ziggler comes close to winning cleanly, making it seem like on any other night he could get the win. ________________________________________________________________________________ Sandow & Rhodes involved in Punk/Ryback matches: In other news from the European Tour the ending to Ryback vs CM Punk now features Rhodes Scholars interfering, getting Punk disqualified. Like Ziggler/Cena the company still have cold feet in putting Ryback over clean and have opted to get the heels over instead, making the potential pay-off much sweeter. That being said this doesn’t mean the payoff will be Ryback beating Punk one on one for the title. If he gets a win at this point, it will be in the Survivor Series match. The inclusion of Cody Rhodes and Damien Sandow is obviously to hype the PPV. Speaking of Cody he cleverly explained away his loss to Brodus Clay on Saturday Morning Slam as being due to the violence restrictions. He wrote on Twitter: “Curious about Slam’?? When you can’t punch or kick…you dance. Upset of the year(Brodus Clay got a victory over me right in the middle)” When you spend your whole life trying to get to the big time, it must be legitimately frustrating to be told you cant actually do wrestling moves on one of the shows. ________________________________________________________________________________ Jim Ross discusses lengthy process of acquiring the Watts’ Mid-South footage library: JR was recently interviewed by the Miami Herald about the process WWE went through to purchase the footage library of the legendary Mid-South wrestling territory, owned by the Watts family. Mid-South wrestling captured early moments from stars such as Andre The Giant, Ted DiBiase, Mick Foley, Shawn Michaels, Jake Roberts, Sting and many others, and will likely be repacked in to a WWE documentary and DVD set, as well as broadcast on the future WWE Network if it gets off the ground. Ross was a fundamental part of the negotiation process. He explained: “I was involved in it in the early going several years ago. The dialogue between WWE and Bill Watts ex-wife Ene and his family have been on-going for several years, and for whatever reason we just couldn’t come to terms that both entities were comfortable with.” “After we got so deep in the negotiations, at a certain point, I removed myself from the negotiations because I really felt like it was a conflict of interest for me. Bill Watts was my mentor. He gave me my first job in the business. I was close to his family.” “So at a certain point, when it got real serious, I felt like I had done my due diligence. The company was aware of how I perceived the [Mid-South Wrestling] brand. They knew that the brand had been maintained, and the master tapes had been protected. So I’d done my job there, but when it got down to really seriously talking about the money, I felt like it would be best for me to back out of that aspect of it.” “That was me. It wasn’t WWE or the Watts family. It was me saying, ‘Hey, look. I’m too close to this brand to be as objective as I need to be from a WWE standpoint.’ Somebody else needs to step in here now that doesn’t have the emotional investment in the brand and the history of it. It made sense for me to let somebody else pound out the dollars and do the deal.” “I think I’d done my work. I think my work was explain and communicate to WWE what was there in the [Mid-South Wrestling] library and the many things that could be mined out of the library. As far as the Watts family was concerned, I think I’d done my job with them. WWE was seriously interested in it. I thought it would be a great way to preserve the legacy of all the hard work that was being done at that time that I was a part of, first-hand knowledge of knowing how hard we worked to make that brand successful. It wouldn’t be forgotten, and it would be a way that the world could enjoy what we did, enjoy our work.” “So I’d done my share of lifting and left it to the WWE’s people to finalize it. I was real happy that they finally got it done.” A number of DVDs have already been released independently by the Watts family, but the WWE machine can help this golden footage reach a much wider audience.
