On Saturday night, Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) host a Prime Video exclusive fight card from the Michelob Ultra Arena in Las Vegas, NV.
Interim WBA super middleweight champion Caleb Plant (23-2, 14 KOs) looks to continue the momentum he has in and out of the ring as he faces former sparring partner Armando Resendiz (15-2, 11 KOs) as the headliner for PBC on Prime. Will this be another great performance by Plant, which sparks plans for a mega fight later this year with Jermall Charlo, or will Resendiz play spoiler as so many have done this year so far?
Normally when a fighter loses a high-profile fight, they don’t typically get better or see their stock rise even more. Plant has been an example of someone whose stock has risen since suffering a defeat against the undisputed super middleweight champion Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez in November 2021. After that fight, he began to develop his brand, “The Revenge Tour,” which evolved from a fighter merchandise line to an actual clothing brand, achieving success on an independent level.
Inside the ring, Plant would go 2-1 after the Canelo fight, but even with the loss against David Benavidez, the fans have stuck by him, and he’s gained new ones along the way. In those two wins against Anthony Dirrell in October 2022 and Trevor McCumby in September 2024, Plant showed a more aggressive approach in his game, which attracted more fans. Now he is on the brink of another big fight but must first get by Resendiz.
How does Plant defeat an all-action Mexican contender? Plant has to fight with his mind and not his heart. Resendiz will be coming right through the front door and trying to make it a war, just as he did with Jarrett Hurd. Resendiz is willing to take punishment just to get his shots off, especially on the inside. Its why Plant must stay on the outside and pick him apart from a distance. If Plant decides to go on the inside, it must be for a short time, followed by a hold. Plant can frustrate Resendiz while just boxing from the outside in hopes he makes a mistake before the final bell. If not, Plant can box his way to a decision.
It’s been an interesting year so far, as quite a few betting underdogs have upset the apple card within the first five months of the year, with the most recent being Ekow Essuman over Josh Taylor in Glasgow, Scotland. Resendiz is no stranger to this, as he upset Jarret Hurd in March 2023 and put his name on the radar of fight fans.
Resendiz would get stopped in September 2023 by Elijah Garcia but then bounce back with a fifth-round stoppage of Fernando Paliza in February. While Resendiz has sparred Plant and feels he got the best of him, can he use that same approach against Plant when it counts?
For Resendiz to have a shot at winning this fight, he needs to make it into a brawl. He has to cut off the ring and force Plant to fight on the inside against him. If Resendiz can do this, he has a shot at catching Plant with his swarming offense and generating a stoppage. It’s a big ask, but if successful, we could be in for a shocker.
This will be an interesting fight if Plant decides to stay on the inside and make it a slugfest with Resendiz, but I don’t see that happening. Plant will use his footwork and Ring IQ to keep it outside of mid-range and box his way to a unanimous decision.
Per DraftKings SportsBook, Caleb Plant is the favorite at -2500, and Armando Resendiz is the underdog at +1100.
Caleb Plant: TKO/KO -210; Decision +180
Draw: +2800
Armando Resendiz: TKO/KO +1600; Decision +3000
These timings could change due to the length of the undercard fights.
