In a recent interview with the Detroit Free Press, Claressa Shields explains her marijuana suspension for testing positive and the overturning of said suspension following her victory against Danielle Perkins back in February.
In March, Shields had a meeting with the Michigan Unarmed Combat Commission. During the meeting she presented them with a negative test as evidence.
The suspension was officially dissolved on March 14.
I guess it was three nanograms of marijuana in my system,” Shields said. “And hey, I’ve never smoked weed, I’ve never ate weed or anything. I definitely kept my innocence, defended my innocence.
“I had to go through a shorter-term suspension by the Michigan commission until they did their research, got the facts, talked to me and go to trial and all this stuff. It was very stressful.”
Shields said that she is working with the commission to bring the state’s standards for testing in line with the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), which is set at 150 nanograms of marijuana per milliliter in a urine test.
“Moving forward, I’m hoping the Michigan commission will work with me and we can actually have a further discussion about WADA and VADA (Voluntary Anti-Doping Agency), which test for the Olympics, and how if you are past 150 nanograms, then they test you positive for marijuana. And I think the Michigan commission should take up those same rules because there’s going to be so many faulty tests.”
