Did Dubois Quit Against Usyk?
Jon Durr-Imagn Images

Daniel Dubois has been accused of quitting against Oleksandr Usyk, resulting in a strong reaction.

The claims come amid his stoppage defeat to Usyk, which prevented him from becoming the undisputed heavyweight champion. It was the second time Usyk had beaten Dubois, having also stopped him in the first fight. The defeats raised the issue of Dubois quitting since he got up from the count in both fights after it was over.

Dubois has been fighting off this criticism ever since he took a knee against Joe Joyce in that loss. However, it is important to bear in mind that Dubois suffered a fractured eye socket and damage to his nerve near his left eye. Tyson Fury has responded to the claims, defending Dubois. The Gypsy King has been praised throughout his career for never quitting.

He famously got up in the 12th round in the first Deontay Wilder fight, just when it seemed he was knocked out. Fury also rallied to a 12-round decision win over Otto Wallin, despite suffering a massive cut that plagued him during the fight. Fury also showed his powers of recovery in the first Usyk fight, just when it seems he was going to be knocked out in the ninth round. Fury has defended Dubois.

Reaction

“I keep getting asked about this Dubois situation and all this quitting stuff and whatever else. Here’s the facts. The facts are young Daniel did his best against one of the greatest champions that has ever been and he was not good enough. He came up short. He got put down twice. What do you want him to do, die in the ring? If you ever want to do any training, come to Morecambe any time you want kid. There is no jealousy here,” Fury said

Not everyone saw it like Fury, as Derek Chisora did not hold back.

“The biggest stage of your life, for undisputed, we’re in the game of getting hit in the head. You get up and fight again. He got up and walked back to his corner, normally. His corner chucked the towel in because they knew he wanted to come out. He was supposed to give it one last hurrah before he gets knocked out — just go in there and chuck everything that he could.

“We’re in the game of fighting and you have to go to the well when you have to. People have spent hard-earned money to watch you. I’ve had 49 fights, have you ever seen me quit? Exactly. I just don’t know how to quit. Tyson is not a quitter, AJ is not a quitter. Daniel did not get up as he did not want no more. “They have to fix that. We’re not talking badly — but it will happen again and again and again,” Chisora stated
