In a day, Erickson Lubin (27-2, 19 KOs) will face Vergil Ortiz Jr (23-0, 21 KOs) for his interim WBC super welterweight title. With his mind set on dismantling Ortiz, Lubin knows that the title is merely a stepping stone, for he has big plans for his future in the division.
As the duo sat down for their ‘Face 2 Face’ interview, Lubin had one thing to say about the upcoming fight: it is his time to find his place at the division’s pedestals.
“I feel like he’s a great fighter, but right now is my time. I have faced the toughest guys in the division,” he said. “I am ready to prove myself, fighting against a third undefeated opponent in a row, and a top contender. I am looking to solidify myself as the top 154-pounder.”
This will be the second time he has fought for the interim WBC super welterweight title. He faced Sebastian Fundora for the title in 2022. The duo equally traded blows, and Lubin led on two of the cards by a point.
However, his team had to throw in the towel during the ninth round, as the volley of punishment that he received became overwhelming. And, with Ortiz sharing a similar pugilistic prowess, especially with unceasing punch power, many wonder how Lubin would fare against him.
‘The Hammer’, however, has a message for the doubters.
“I read comments online; I see how people are overlooking me. But that’s just fuel to my fire. With people overlooking me, it’s bringing back that fire in me,” he said.
While he’s got a host of doubters, Lubin is certain that his upcoming opponent is not overlooking him. In the same interview, he mentioned that they have mutual respect for each other and that he is looking to prove himself on fight night.
“I can see it in his eyes. I know he’s not overlooking me, and I am not overlooking him,” Lubin said. “He knows where I come from, what type of fighter I am. I see the guys that he’s fought. He made easy work out of those dudes,” he said. “I will prove myself on fight night. We have the game plans drawn up.”
