Ryan Garcia’s Career Is At A Crossroads After Latest News

Ryan Garcia is facing further setbacks, as evidenced by his latest injury news, which now puts the boxer at a crossroads.

Garcia tasted the second defeat of his career when Rolando Romero beat him via a unanimous decision. The news was a massive upset, given Garcia’s last performance. Ryan had dropped Devin Haney three times in a majority decision win, only for the result to become a no-contest after Garcia failed VADA tests for Ostarine.

Oscar De La Hoya wants the rematch, putting the pressure on Ryan to deliver in a fight that he was expected to win. Garcia allegedly suffered a hand injury while he was preparing for the Rolly fight. It is claimed he had “multiple cortisone injections” as he will have surgery on his right hand. Garcia is expected to be out for six weeks before he can get back to training.

Garcia Reacts

“I think the whole year took a lot out of my body physically and mentally. I’m just thankful I made it to the ring and went 12 rounds. So, thank God for the opportunity. Hats off to Rolly. He did a great job,” Garcia said

That news adds more to the woes in his camp. Ryan has not settled with a trainer since leaving Joe Goossen following the Tank Davis fight. Garcia teamed up with Derrick James before going back to Eddy Reynoso for the Romero fight. However, since Reynoso was helping Canelo, Garcia made a return to James only to suffer a loss.

Garcia must decide on the boxing style he wants. The Haney fight showed a more disciplined, Ryan, while the Romero loss saw him making the same flaws. Garcia lept back with his hands down, getting countered by a left hand, the same thing Tank Davis landed to drop him.

Issues

Garcia is also facing questions over his prior wins due to the failed tests. Ryan is known for having knockout power, with 20 KOs in his 24 wins. However, fighters have shown they are not the same once they return from failed tests. Conor Benn has failed to get a knockout since his return from failed VADA tests for Clomiphene. Garcia also boxed at 147, where he was much healthier without the need to cut weight. Yet, he never looked like he was hurting Romero.

Garcia’s star power has also suffered. He has developed a reputation for falling short at the top level. The stoppage loss to Gervonta Davis was his first loss in the biggest bout of his career. Meanwhile, Ryan failed to beat Haney when the WBC Junior Welterweight Title was on the line. Even if Garcia had not failed the VADA tests, he failed to make weight, meaning he was not eligible to fight for the world title. Garcia’s career is now at a crossroads.
