Welcome to Big 12 Men’s Basketball. The conference season began on Saturday, January 6, with seven games, all but one of those involving a ranked team.
The Big 12 is poised to be one of the most, if not the most, competitive conferences in the nation. The parity among the teams is such that any team can beat another team any day, either at home or on the road.
Last week’s rankings had six of the teams ranked in the Top 25 – Kansas (2/2), Houston (3/3), Oklahoma (11/11), BYU (12/12), Baylor (18/18), and Texas (20/22). In addition, Iowa State was receiving votes in both polls (31/32), and TCU was receiving votes in the Coaches Poll (34).
The conference’s NET ranking of 48.79 is the lowest of all leagues. The next-lowest is the SEC at 65.07.
Texas Tech beat Texas in Austin for the biggest upset of the weekend. Baylor survived an overtime game against Oklahoma State. Kansas held off to beat TCU by two in Lawrence. Oklahoma remained hot with a 9-point win over Iowa State. The other three games were all wins by double digits.
