The 2025 Women’s Cricket World Cup is just a few days away, and the ICC most recently added to the excitement by announcing a massive increase in the tournament’s prize money pool. The winner of the 2025 event, which will be hosted by India and Sri Lanka, will receive a whopping $4.48 million.
The World Cup, in its 13th edition, would be a notable one. Four cities in India, including Navi Mumbai, Guwahati, Vizag and Indore, and Sri Lankan capital Colombo will be hosting the 31 matches at the upcoming mega event, to be held from September 30 to November 2. All eight qualified teams will be vying for the coveted title, with the massive new prize pool serving as a major incentive.
The overall prize money pool for the eight-team tournament totals a whopping $13.88 million, which is surprisingly more than the $10 million that was awarded at the Men’s ODI World Cup just two years ago. The 2022 Women’s World Cup in New Zealand had a prize pool of $3.5 million, while the 2025 edition will see a staggering rise of 297 percent. The current prize money is also significantly higher than what is offered in many major global franchise leagues, including the IPL.
ICC Chairman Jay Shah highlighted the ICC’s principle of paying male and female professional cricketers on equal terms. The winner of the 2025 World Cup will now receive $4.48 million, a 239% increase from the $1.32 million that was awarded to Australia in 2022. The runners-up will also receive a massive prize of $2.24 million, a 273% increase from the $600,000 that England won in 2022.

The two losing semi-finalists will take home $1.12 million each, a 272% rise from the $300,000 paid in 2022. Teams finishing fifth and sixth will be awarded $700,000, more than what was given to the runners-up of the past editions. Even the seventh and eighth-placed teams will be paid $280,000 each. Furthermore, a win in a group-stage match will earn a team an additional $34,414.
This impressive rise clearly shows how well women’s cricket has progressed. With India coming off an ODI series victory against England, they will be among the favorites to win the 2025 World Cup.
Last month, the BCCI announced the 15-member Indian squad for the upcoming 2025 Women’s World Cup, scheduled to begin on September 30. The Women in Blue will be aiming to win the World Cup title, having failed to do so in the past despite making it to the final twice, in 2005 and 2017.
Harmanpreet Kaur will lead the side, while Smriti Mandhana has been named deputy. Two other batters have been selected: T20I star Jemimah Rodrigues and Pratika Rawal. Rawal has been in excellent form and has secured the second opening spot alongside Mandhana, keeping young Shafali Verma out of the squad. Yastika Bhatia and Richa Ghosh are the two wicket-keepers who have been picked.
In the middle, captain Harmanpreet will likely be joined by the other all-round picks, including Harleen Deol, Deepti Sharma, Sneh Rana and Amanjot Kaur. However, Amanjot has not been picked in the ODI series against Australia that precedes the 2025 Women’s World Cup, with batter Sayali Satghare taking her spot. Both Amanjot and Harleen Deol will be making their World Cup debuts.
In bowling, Radha Yadav, Kranti Goud, Shree Charani, Arundhati Reddy and Renuka Singh Thakur have been picked. Ace pacer Renuka Thakur will make her comeback after recovering from a foot injury that she sustained while playing in the Women’s Premier League earlier this year.
