Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) have announced a replacement for their injured pacer David Payne. The fast bowler will miss the rest of IPL 2026 due to injury. SRH became the new team for Gerald Coetzee because they needed someone to replace the injured player. The IPL confirmed this move through an official statement on April 18.
Sunrisers Hyderabad confirmed the signing of Gerald Coetzee as a replacement for David Payne. The official IPL statement showed that SRH signed Coetzee to compete in their remaining matches of TATA Indian Premier League 2026.
Gerald Coetzee brings valuable experience to the squad. The South African pacer has already played 14 IPL matches for Gujarat Titans and Mumbai Indians while taking 15 wickets. SRH signed him for INR 2 crore. The right-arm quick has played 4 Tests and 14 ODIs and 18 T20Is for South Africa while taking 67 wickets.

The report confirmed that David Payne would miss the entire IPL 2026 season because of an ankle injury which he sustained on April 16. He participated in two matches before his exclusion from the team when he achieved a total of two wickets. He participated in the first two matches of SRH's season opening matches.
SRH acquired Payne as a replacement player because Australian pacer Jack Edwards had to miss the season due to ongoing recovery from his foot injury. The franchise selected Gerald Coetzee as their new replacement signing after Payne suffered his injury.
Payne achieved 2 wickets during his short time with the team but his performance cost his team more money than expected. He bowled against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and achieved two wickets while allowing 35 runs during his three overs but he failed to take wickets against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) while he allowed 35 runs to score in just two overs.
The team made its first player change when they brought in another player during the ongoing season. The English pace-bowling all-rounder Brydon Carse from their team suffered an injury after being struck during a net session. The franchise signed Sri Lankan pacer Dilshan Madushanka to replace him.
The team still has concerns about their captain Pat Cummins who serves as their main fast bowler because he has not yet played in IPL 2026 for SRH. The team received good news when Cricket Australia announced that Cummins will soon join the team after he finishes his back scans in Sydney.
Ishan Kishan has taken over as captain because Cummins cannot play. Under his leadership, SRH currently sit fifth on the points table with two wins from five matches. They won their previous game against Rajasthan Royals and will face Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at their home ground in Hyderabad on Saturday.
