Williams, Taylor the notable inclusions in Zimbabwe squad for Sri Lanka T20Is

Zimbabwe have named a 16-member squad for the upcoming three-match T20I series against Sri Lanka, headlined by the return of senior pros Sean Williams and Brendan Taylor.

Williams, the proficient all-rounder, makes his comeback after last representing the Chevrons in the shortest format against Bangladesh in May 2024. Joining him is seasoned wicketkeeper-batter Taylor, who recently returned to the Test and ODI formats after serving an ICC ban.

Taylor had been out of action in the 50-overs format since playing against Ireland in September 2021. The experienced campaigner made his international comeback earlier this month, in the second Test against New Zealand in Bulawayo.

Alongside Williams and Taylor, Brad Evans and Tadiwanashe Marumani have also found a mention in the squad. Left out from the team that featured in last month’s triangular series against New Zealand and South Africa are Newman Nyamhuri, Wessly Madhevere, Vincent Masekesa and Tafadzwa Tsiga.

Sri Lanka’s T20I squad for the Zimbabwe tour, meanwhile, features Vishen Halambage and Dushan Hemantha in Wanindu Hasaranga’s absence, besides the remainder of the Asia Cup unit. The leg-spinning all-rounder was not picked in the Charith Asalanka-led 16-member Sri Lanka squad for the two-match ODI series in Zimbabwe. He had suffered a hamstring injury during the T20I series against Bangladesh in July, sat out the ODIs versus Bangladesh and was subsequently sidelined for the 50-overs games against Zimbabwe as well.

The series will act as vital preparation for Zimbabwe ahead of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Africa Qualifier, which begins later this month in Harare.
