In what comes as a watershed development, the ICC has announced a jumbo prize money pool for the upcoming Women’s ODI World Cup in India, scheduled to take place from September 30 to November 2. The total sum of USD 13.88 million is nearly four times of what the ICC proffered at the last edition of this tournament in 2022, organized in New Zealand (USD 3.5 million).
Most importantly, this sum exceeds the amount demarcated as prize money for the Men’s ODI World Cup in 2023 – USD 10 million.
“This announcement marks a defining milestone in the journey of women’s cricket,” ICC chairman Jay Shah said. “This four-fold increase in prize money is a landmark moment for women’s cricket and reflects our clear commitment to its long-term growth. Our message is simple, women cricketers must know they will be treated on par with men if they choose this sport professionally.”
ICC has enhanced the prize money for each stage of the tournament as well as the guaranteed purse. The winner of the World Cup will now take home USD 4.48 million, a significant leap from what the Australian women’s team bagged in 2022 – USD 1.32 million – and an improvement on what their men’s side received for trouncing India in Ahmedabad in 2023 – USD 4 million.
The runners-up in the upcoming tournament will be the beneficiary of USD 2.24 million, again a considerable upgrade on what England got (USD 600,000) in 2022. The two losing semi-finalists will each be recipients of USD 1.12 million – up from the previous sum of USD 300,000.
For every group-stage victory, the winners will be entitled to USD 34,314. The teams that end fifth and sixth will fetch USD 700,000 each while those finishing seventh and eighth will be provided USD 280,000. Each participating team is assured a sum of USD 250,000.
The eight-team marquee event will be played in India and Sri Lanka starting from September 30.
