Michael Cera thinks "dumb luck" is the reason for his success.
The 36-year-old actor started his career as child and dabbled in various teen programmes before finding mainstream success with the sitcom 'Arrested Development' but has always made sure to "live on very little" so he can keep his passion alive with the projects he chooses.
Asked how he found success, he told PageSix: "Dumb luck. I’ve always kind of lived [on] very little means in a way because I really like having freedom to say no to things. It's how to stay in love with what you’re doing."
The 'Barbie' star enjoys having time to himself in between acting jobs, but is then always eager to get back to work as he noted that as a freelancer it is always impossible to know where the next paycheque is coming from.
He said: "I kind of like time in between jobs, then I get kind of itchy. As an actor, you’re like a freelance person and you never know what the next thing is, so you kind of have to make peace with that feeling of the unknown."
Most recently, Michael can be seen in the Wes Anderson movie 'The Phoenician Scheme' and noted that it "definitely felt goofy" to put on the Swedish accent that was required for the role of entomologist Bjorn Lund.
He added: "[I was] calibrating it in a way that it didn’t tip into being distracting or damaging the overall balance and the effect of the movie."
"Working with Anderson was surreal, but it also just feels normal…Everybody’s happy to be there. And you really feel that. Everybody knows that it’s an unusual opportunity to work on a movie like this with someone like Wes and with a team like that.
“So, there’s a really happy spirit in the air.”

WNBA legend Lisa Leslie had three words for Angel Reese
Now in her second WNBA season, Chicago Sky forward Angel Reese is averaging a league‑leading 12.5 rebounds along with 13.8 points, 3.7 assists and 1.4 steals per game. She recently returned from injury and immediately picked up where she left off, posting her 16th double‑double of the season (11 points, 11 rebounds) on Tuesday night even as her Chicago Sky fell, 91-68, to the Minnesota Lynx. Then, on Wednesday, Reese showcased her brand power on Instagram, posting a pregame photo dressed head‑to‑toe in Gucci with the caption, "Don’t worry about me… life is GUCCI @gucci #guccipartner." The image quickly lit up her feed and drew an immediate response from one of the game’s all‑time greats, WNBA legend Lisa Leslie, who commented, “Yessss it is❤️." Despite flashes of elite play, the Sky have struggled mightily, standing at just 7-17 and sitting fifth in the Eastern Conference. Their 76.7 points per game rank 12th in the WNBA, and opponents are torching them for 86.8 a night (12th in the league). With head coach Tyler Marsh searching for consistency, every bright spot has been a welcome reprieve for a franchise that won the title as recently as 2021. Front and center among Chicago’s bright spots is Reese. Off the court, Reese has quickly built a burgeoning portfolio of endorsement deals, including Reebok, Calvin Klein, Beats by Dre, Amazon and now Gucci, underscoring her status as one of the WNBA’s brightest personalities. On the other side, you have Leslie, whose voice carries more weight than arguably anybody in women’s basketball. A three‑time league MVP, two‑time WNBA champion and Finals MVP and eight‑time All‑Star, Leslie helped define the league’s early years with the Los Angeles Sparks, including driving home the first dunk in WNBA history in 2002. A Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Famer (class of 2015), she remains a global ambassador for the sport.
New report suggests Christian Wilkins release related to 'incident' with teammate
There may be more to Christian Wilkins’ recent surprise release from the Las Vegas Raiders. NFL reporter Josina Anderson reported Saturday that "some sources believe an incident involving a teammate may have factored in-part into the Raiders' fatigue and release" of Wilkins. The nature of the incident is not clear. However, many believe the Raiders had a very good reason to move on from Wilkins considering the money they had invested in him. It also suggests the Raiders saw no alternative if they went straight to a release. Wilkins was dumped by the Raiders just one year into a four-year, $110 million deal. The Raiders suggested Wilkins failed to take rehab seriously as he tries to work his way back from a foot injury. Other teams do not appear to have the same concerns about Wilkins as the Raiders did, and he should find a new landing spot fairly easily. That is one of the reasons some suspect there is more to the Raiders’ decision than they are publicly saying.
Commanders WR Terry McLaurin expands on ending training-camp holdout
Washington Commanders wide receiver Terry McLaurin had been holding out of training camp but reported Sunday. McLaurin was fined $200K ($50K per day) for skipping four days of camp. The fines, however, aren't the only reason he returned to the team's facility in Ashburn, Va. He also missed spending time with fans and teammates. According to ESPN's John Keim, supporters chanted his name at Sunday's practice, and the WR later signed autographs for approximately 30 minutes. "It feels good to be around my teammates and around the fans," the WR said, per Keim. "I can't beat that at all. They showed me a lot of love and support. You lose sight of something when the business gets involved, but I never lost sight of the way they supported me. It's business, but it has nothing to do with them." While it's a positive for the Commanders that McLaurin is no longer holding out, it's fair to wonder whether contract negotiations will continue to drag on. The WR is entering the final year of his deal and seeking an extension. (He's set to make $15.5M this season.) McLaurin and the team have made little progress in negotiations thus far. The two-time Pro Bowler recorded a career-high 13 touchdown catches in 17 games last season, but his age could be a concern for the Commanders. McLaurin turns 30 on Sept. 15. He's already injured as well. McLaurin is starting training camp on the active/physically unable to perform list because of an ankle issue. The WR is aiming to make a quick recovery and insists his age shouldn't be a factor in contract negotiations. McLaurin said the Commanders should view it on a "case-by-case" basis. McLaurin has been one of the NFL's more consistent pass-catchers, surpassing 1,000 receiving yards in five of his first six seasons with Washington. Now that he's back with the team, perhaps that will remind the Commanders why they love having him around. That could expedite contract talks.
White Sox Pitcher Might be Perfect for Yankees
After making two major infield moves over the weekend, the New York Yankees are expected to shop for pitchers, and there are still a few names floating around as the trade deadline approaches. Among the favorites are right handed pitcher Mitch Keller from the Pittsburgh Pirates and two RHPs from the Arizona Diamondbacks: Merrill Kelly and Zac Gallen. Kelly and Gallen are expected to be packaged with Diamondbacks third baseman and slugger Eugenio Suarez, but given the Yankees' recent infield acquisitions, a trade for Suarez may be unlikely. Writing for Yanks go Yard, Peyton Crowder suggested Chicago White Sox starting pitcher Adrian Houser, whose performance this season with the White Sox would make him a fantastic fit in the Bronx. "[...] one name that has gone relatively unnoticed could be a perfect fit for the Yankees: White Sox starting pitcher Adrian Houser, who has been fantastic in his 10 starts on the South Side," Crowder said. "He has posted a 1.89 ERA through 62 innings with 44 strikeouts." "Now, do we expect him to continue to perform at such a ridiculous level if he does get dealt to the Yankees? Probably not. But could he very well be an excellent third of fourth starter? Absolutely. He has two very good fastball shapes, a trait pitching coach Matt Blake and the rest of the Yankees staff adore. His breaking stuff hasn’t been great, but you would imagine that would be something that gets worked on." Houser has a 6-2 record this season in 11 starts, and a 2.10 ERA, The Yankees have been hurting for pitchers for a while now. While the position isn't exactly their biggest issue (they could use stronger defense overall), the sheer number of injuries this season has taken a toll. The Yankees' most recent loss was Clarke Schmidt, who went in for season-ending Tommy John surgery on July 11. Carlos Rodon and Max Fried have been picking up the slack for the most part, but Fried has had his own share of recent minor finger injuries. The Yankees have begun utilizing hopeful up-and-comer Cam Schlittler, who has given two strong starts since being called up.
