First-look photo released for film marking Daniel Day-Lewis' return to acting

Daniel Day-Lewis is widely regarded as one of the greatest living actors, with three Oscars to his name. But before the release of 2017’s ‘Phantom Thread,’ his team issued a statement:

Daniel Day-Lewis will no longer be working as an actor. He is immensely grateful to all of his collaborators and audiences over the many years. This is a private decision and neither he nor his representatives will make any further comment on this subject.

‘Phantom Thread’ wasn’t the most fitting swan song — it’s one of Paul Thomas Anderson’s least-acclaimed film, though still strong by PTA standards — but Day-Lewis delivered as always. For years, he stuck to his word about retiring. Now, that retirement is over. He has a new film, ‘Anemone,’ set for release later this year.

‘Anemone’ will make its debut at the New York Film Festival, which has been picking up some strong titles this year. The film is set in Northern England and stars Sean Bean as a man who ventures into the woods to find his estranged brother, who lives as a hermit. That brother is played by Daniel Day-Lewis. As the official description puts it, “Bonded by a mysterious, complicated past, the men share a fraught, if occasionally tender relationship, one that was forever altered by shattering events decades earlier.”

While Day-Lewis has reversed his retirement, the project is an understandable return. ‘Anemone’ was co-written by the actor and the film’s director, Ronan Day-Lewis — Daniel’s son. This marks Ronan’s feature directorial debut.

Daniel Day-Lewis is clearly doing his son a solid here. It doesn’t hurt your odds of getting a movie made, or noticed, when you can say, “A three-time Oscar winner came out of retirement for this.” Nepotism? Sure. But it’s also a chance to see Day-Lewis act again, which is never a bad thing. If he could find a way to be compelling in Nine, he’ll make sure 'Anemone' works.
