Top Gun: Maverick was a pretty big hit at the box office, bringing in almost $1.5 billion during its theatrical run against a budget of just $170 million — pretty impressive, really. Fans and critics both loved it, too, so it was only a matter of time before a third film in the series came along. If Glen Powell is to be believed, that might be sooner rather than later.
In an interview with Josh Horowitz, Glen Powell might have let slip that the next Top Gun film could be just around the corner. Powell, who was in the interview alongside Twisters co-star Daisy Edgar-Jones, was asked in the interview whether Edgar-Jones’ Normal People series would be continued first, or whether a new Top Gun film would come sooner.
Powell says he’s “got a date,” before asking Edgar-Jones if she does. She says she doesn’t, to which Powell replies “probably me then” in answer to the question. If that’s not a confirmation of the next Top Gun film coming soon, we don’t know what is.
It was first reported in January that Paramount was working on a third Top Gun film, with Maverick co-writer Ehren Kruger set to be writing the script for the film. According to Variety, the film would see Powell returning alongside co-star Miles Teller for a bigger focus on the younger pilots featured in Maverick.
It’s not known if Tom Cruise would also return to the film, and if so, whether it be as a leading man or as more of a supportive role. Still, it’s hard to imagine any Top Gun film going ahead without Cruise’s involvement, so when the third film finally does make an appearance, you can expect him to be in it.
While we wait, though, there’s always plenty of Tom Cruise to go around. As you can see from the best Tom Cruise movies ranked worst to best, there’s hours upon hours of straight bangers with the star to enjoy.
