After last night's season finale of Grey's Anatomy, "How Do I Live," fans are desperate to find out who survived the explosion, and while we will have to wait until the show returns in the fall, showrunner Meg Marinis is giving us a few clues about who is and is not at risk.
While the interns are excited to transition to second-year residency, an ordinary day at Grey Sloan takes an unexpected turn when a medical emergency unfolds in the operating room, endangering lives inside the hospital.
"I feel like a lot of people are probably sitting in operating rooms, so unless you saw them and where they were when that explosion went off, I don’t think we can say anyone is necessarily safe," she explained to The Hollywood Reporter. She confirmed that Adams was "running up to the operating floor" and Jules was "also on the OR floor." These are two more people to add to the growing list of possible victims.
"When I wrote the script and I was going through that final montage, I was just like, 'I’m going to put these people here.' Then even after the table read, I added somebody on that OR floor. I put Jules going up there," she continued to add. Warren ran back into the building after the explosion, and even though Jo was outside the building, "we didn’t see her leave, so it just depends on what exit she took."
As for who might not survive the major cliffhanger, she shared, "We go back in the writers room on Monday. I definitely have thoughts. Whether or not those thoughts change, that can always happen. I haven’t put pen to paper yet, but it’ll be very soon that I do."
Additionally, the dramatic episode included an appearance from Ellen Pompeo, who went into the OR in hopes of helping Amelia and Lucas. "When I knew I wanted to have Ellen in the episode, I wanted to give her a nostalgic hero moment. Even though she’s not in every episode and she wasn’t necessarily on this case, if we have her in the finale and we intentionally put Lucas in there with Amelia and make it Meredith’s family, we can give her the hero moment," Marinis expressed. "Just like the bomb-in-a-body-cavity episode, because it’s Meredith, she would do anything to save the hospital and the people who are in it."
All episodes of Grey's Anatomy season 21 are streaming on Hulu.
