Michael Mann has just dropped a tantalizing update on Heat 2.

As we’ve written previously, Heat 2 is Michael Mann’s next movie. The director, who helmed the original 1995 heist thriller, has been planning its sequel for years. And now, finally, it looks set to enter production.

“Mann notes he is deep into writing the screenplay adaptation of his novel Heat 2, with a desire to begin shooting at the end of this year or beginning of 2025,” writes the LA Times in an interview with Mann.

Warner Bros.

“On those casting rumors involving the likes of Driver and Austin Butler to step into roles originally played by Robert De Niro and Val Kilmer, Mann says simply, ‘I can’t talk about that.’”

In other words, Mann has already written the novel of Heat 2; now he’s adapting it into a screenplay, but isn’t keen on revealing who he’s got in mind to star in it.

The original cast featured Al Pacino and Robert De Niro in the lead roles as an LAPD detective (Pacino) and a career criminal (De Niro). Joining them are Jon Voight, Val Kilmer, Tom Sizemore, Diana Venora, Amy Brenneman, Ashley Judd, Mykelti Williamson, Wes Studi, and Ted Levine.

Heat 2 is both a prequel and a sequel to Heat, following the aftermath of the LA bank robbery gone bad.
