Alright, pop culture lovers, grab your remotes, Hulu’s cooking up a wild one. The streamer is diving headfirst into ‘90s nostalgia with Stay Tuned, a fresh comedy series starring Josh Gad and Andrew Rannells. Yep, the Broadway bros are not only front and center, but also pulling strings behind the scenes as executive producers.
If the title rings a bell, you’re not wrong. Stay Tuned is a modern spin on the 1992 cult classic that starred John Ritter and Pam Dawber, a quirky, slightly bonkers movie where a couple gets sucked into a hellish TV world. Hulu’s version is taking that bizarre premise and giving it a 2020s upgrade, full of sharp humor, chaotic genre spoofs, and streaming-era satire. It’s made for anyone who’s ever said, “Just one more episode”… four times in a row.
In the original, a regular suburban couple found themselves trapped inside a TV, fighting their way through 24 hours of twisted programming cooked up by some demonic overlord. It was like Black Mirror before Black Mirror, but way goofier.
Hulu’s reboot doesn’t stray too far from the concept, but this time around, it’s tailor-made for our binge-happy generation. Gad and Rannells play characters who end up “on the wrong side of the screen,” stuck inside a chaotic, channel-hopping nightmare. We’re talking spoofs of reality TV, gritty true crime docs, prestige dramas, you name it. It’s satire meets sensory overload, and if done right, it’ll be the kind of show that’s as clever as it is ridiculous.
If you loved The Book of Mormon, this reunion is probably making your heart do a little happy dance. Josh Gad and Andrew Rannells have that kind of rare, effortless chemistry that just works, on stage, on screen, wherever. Gad, of course, is best known as the voice of Olaf (Frozen fans, rise), while Rannells has stacked up some serious TV cred with roles in Girls, A Simple Favor, and Welcome to Chippendales.
Now, they’re not just starring, they’re helping steer the ship as executive producers, which means the humor is bound to have their signature flavor: offbeat, smart, and probably just a touch unhinged.
The creative lineup here is stacked. Akiva Goldsman, yes, A Beautiful Mind Goldsman, is part of the brain trust, along with Jordan Cahan (Black Monday), who’s taking the reins as showrunner, and Greg Lessans. And just like the OG movie, Morgan Creek is back in the mix, repping some serious ‘90s cred. Executive producers James G. Robinson, David Robinson, and Aaron Semmel round out the team, working closely with Gad and Rannells to bring this chaotic vision to life.
Long story short: there are a lot of clever people in the writers’ room, and they know what they’re doing.
There’s no premiere date yet, sadly, but Hulu has a solid track record when it comes to quirky comedies (Only Murders in the Building, anyone?). With the buzz already starting to bubble, Stay Tuned could easily become one of the more talked-about releases of the year. If you’re in the U.S., it’ll land on Hulu. International fans? Keep your eyes peeled for a Disney+ drop.
