James Gunn has been holding onto 'Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3' script for 3 years

James Gunn is epitomizing comebacks in 2021.

The acclaimed filmmaker was fired from Marvel and the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise when crude tweets resurfaced in July 2018, and he confirmed to The New York Times earlier this month that the aftermath was so bleak that he "was going to have to sell my house."

Now, the Gunn-directed The Suicide Squad is set to hit theaters Aug. 6, and he is helming the forthcoming HBO Max spinoff series Peacemaker. All the while, according to this interview with Collider, Gunn has kept the third Guardians of the Galaxy installment in his back pocket.

"It's basically been finished for years," Gunn told the outlet, while also confirming the title will be Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and filming will begin in November. "I keep fiddling with different things and adding things, and figuring out permutations and stuff—I’m in the middle of doing another draft now—but it's really small stuff in comparison to what it has been. It's basically been finished since three years ago."

Chris Pratt, Guardians of the Galaxy's leading man, previously teased at the beginning of July that filming would start later this year. "James Gunn is back," Pratt told Variety.

Guardians of the Galaxy debuted in 2014, and Vol. 2 followed in 2017. Gunn directed and wrote both films.
