The Man of Steel is finally flying back into theaters. However, this time, he’s carrying something more than super strength, laser vision, and flight. Under James Gunn’s direction, Superman is returning with a deeply human message.
And as Gunn continues teasing what’s next, it’s becoming increasingly clear that David Corenswet’s Superman won’t be a one-time phenomenon. In fact, Gunn has big plans for him across multiple upcoming DCU projects.
Although ‘Superman’ is set to premiere on July 11, 2025, fans are already looking ahead, and so is James Gunn. In a recent interview with Brazilian outlet Omelete, Gunn revealed that David Corenswet’s involvement in the larger DC Universe is already secured. When asked about future projects, Gunn shared a vague but promising update.
Corenswet asked him what else he was working on, and Gunn responded, “He knows he’s a part of it. He doesn’t know what it is… literally nothing.” That offhand remark has sparked speculation that Superman could show up sooner than we think. Fans are speculating that he could appear in ‘Peacemaker’ Season 2, which Gunn is also working on. Scheduled to hit Max on August 21, the sequel series could potentially feature a surprise cameo from the new Superman.
However, Gunn made it clear that the next project involving Superman won’t be ‘Superman 2’. Instead, it appears to be a yet-to-be-announced movie or show where Superman plays a significant, though not central, role. Additionally, Gunn previously mentioned that his favorite upcoming DCU project hasn’t been announced at all. Could this be the mystery title where Superman makes his next appearance?
While fans are naturally curious about Superman’s powers, villains, and action sequences, James Gunn is focused on something far deeper. In his own words, the essence of his Superman film is not cosmic battles or multiverse chaos, it’s human kindness. “Superman is the story of America. An immigrant who came from other places and populated the country, but for me, it is mostly a story that says basic human kindness is a value and is something we have lost,” Gunn told THR.
This is a bold take. In an era where superhero movies often lean into darkness, cynicism, and brutal realism, Gunn’s Superman is looking upward, both literally and philosophically. And yes, Gunn is fully aware that this vision may ruffle feathers. “Obviously, there will be jerks out there who are just not kind and will take it as offensive just because it’s about kindness,” he said. “But screw them.” That’s a rare level of candidness from a director, and it underscores how passionately Gunn believes in this message.
Rather than avoid potential controversy, Gunn is embracing it. Superman has always been a symbol of what humanity could be at its best, and Gunn is leaning into that legacy with full force. David Corenswet’s debut as Superman represents more than a franchise reboot. It’s a moral reset. Gone is Snyder’s morally confused Superman. In his place is a Superman who knows what he stands for and isn’t afraid to show it.
