Jeopardy! fans were shocked when James Holzhauer wasn’t a part of the lineup for the 2025 Jeopardy! Masters. The champion came in third during the last Masters, so he was an automatic invite.
The executive producers of the game show — Sarah Whitcomb-Foss and Michael Davies — went over the new Masters season during the latest episode of the Inside Jeopardy! Podcast, which was filmed in Washington D.C. on the live tour. During that update, they explained why Holzhauer is not a part of Season 3.
Masters Season 3 begins on Wednesday, April 30, at 9/8c on ABC. Regular Jeopardy! still airs before the tournament, with Celebrity Wheel of Fortune airing in the middle of them. Even with nine players this time, instead of six, Holzhauer still wasn’t in the lineup.
“As always, our top three Masters are guaranteed an invitation to the next Masters,” Whitcomb-Foss said. Victoria Groce and Yogesh Raut, the 2024 Masters winner and runner-up, are returning for Masters 2025. However, James Holzhauer was the next runner-up, but Brad Rutter, the biggest money winner of all time, is taking his place instead.
“But, that might leave you wondering, there is another Master — our third-place finisher James Holzhauer,” Whitcomb-Foss said. “As we mentioned, it is an invitational tournament. We absolutely did extend the invitation to James, and he decided for this year, he was not going to compete.”
“Absolutely his right,” Davies said. “It’s an invitational. We invite the people we want to invite. We extended it to nine people this year to build more equity. We completely respect James’ decision.”
Holzhauer is best known for his 32-game winning streak from April to June 2019. He set multiple single-game records for winning during that time. Holzhauer also won the Tournament of Champions that November. He won $2,464,216 in his 33 appearances, making him the second-highest winner in Jeopardy! regular play, behind Ken Jennings, according to the game show’s website.
The Masters episodes will be one hour long and consist of two games per episode, with nine episodes in total. Alongside Groce, Raut, and Rutter, 2025 Jeopardy! Tournament of Champions winner Neilesh Vinjamuri, TOC finalists Adriana Harmeyer and Isaac Hirsch, 2025 Jeopardy! Invitational Tournament champion Matt Amodio , and JIT finalists Roger Craig and Juveria Zaheer, are all competing.

Star pass-rusher Aidan Hutchinson is once again a key contributor for the Detroit Lions, coming off the devastating injury he suffered last fall. For a piece published on Wednesday, ESPN NFL insider Jeremy Fowler suggested that the Lions could soon lock Hutchinson down beyond the ongoing campaign after the club picked up the 25-year-old's fifth-year option for 2026 this past offseason. Lions, Aidan Hutchinson have had "exploratory" contract talks "Lions edge-rusher Aidan Hutchinson looks destined for a new deal," Fowler shared. "Both sides have had exploratory discussions about an extension, for which Hutchinson is eligible as a fourth-year pro." Back in July, Fowler noted that Hutchinson was leading the NFL in sacks (7.5), pressures and win rate last season before he went down with gruesome fractures of his tibia and fibula in October 2024. According to Pro Football Reference, Hutchinson enters Week 6 of the 2025 campaign tied for third in the league with five sacks and second with three forced fumbles. How much could Aidan Hutchinson make via extension? "Top pass-rushers now make quarterback money, punctuated by Micah Parsons' four-year, $188M deal with Green Bay," Fowler continued. "While I'm not sure Hutchinson tops that number, he'll be among the highest paid at his position whenever this deal gets done. ...Detroit has shown an eagerness to extend its marquee players, and there's none bigger than Hutchinson." Before Parsons put pen to paper on his deal, Maxx Crosby of the Las Vegas Raiders received a three-year, $106.5M extension during the offseason. Myles Garrett of the Cleveland Browns later signed a four-year, $160M deal that included $123.5M guaranteed. During the summer, the Pittsburgh Steelers gave T.J. Watt a three-year, $123M extension that included $108M guaranteed. Wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown, All-Pro offensive tackle Penei Sewell and quarterback Jared Goff are a few examples of Lions players who have received extensions from the club over the past couple of years. That said, both Detroit and Hutchinson may have reasons to drag contract talks out. Hutchinson could increase the value of his deal if he keeps playing well through January (or February). Meanwhile, everybody involved received a harsh reminder roughly 12 months ago that one play can drastically alter or even threaten a player's career. For now, Hutchinson and the 4-1 Lions will focus on preparing for the upcoming "Sunday Night Football" game at the Kansas City Chiefs (2-3). As of Wednesday, ESPN BET had Detroit as a 2.5-point underdog for that matchup.
Bengals QB Jake Browning angry about being benched for Joe Flacco, but team had no choice
Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Jake Browning has officially been benched, and he is not taking it lightly. Browning has started the last three games for the Bengals in the wake of a toe injury that Joe Burrow suffered in Week 2. After going 0-3 in those games, the Bengals decided to acquire Joe Flacco in a trade with the Cleveland Browns on Tuesday. Bengals head coach Zac Taylor announced on Wednesday that Flacco will start in Week 6 against the Green Bay Packers. That means the new guy is taking Browning's job right away, which is hardly a surprise. Jake Browning is not happy about losing his job Browning spoke with reporters shortly after Taylor revealed that Flacco will start in Green Bay. The 29-year-old quarterback said the situation "sucks" but that he understands how the business of the NFL works. "I think it sucks but, like I said, everyone's in the middle of a season. I think, 'Welcome to pro football,'" Browning said. "If you don't play well, you're gonna get replaced, and that's what I'm going through." Browning also admitted he is angry over being benched. Though, he said he is not willing to shoulder the blame for everything that has gone wrong for Cincinnati since Burrow went down. "For me, I'm trying to respond the right way. Obviously, I'm pi--ed. If I wasn't pi--ed, then I shouldn't be in this locker room," Browning added. "I'm aware of the role I played in the offensive struggles over the last few weeks, but I'm also not shouldering the entire situation. I went through yesterday, watched my throws, tried to come up with some stuff I want to work on, and just doing that." Zac Taylor had no choice but to make a switch Browning threw three interceptions in Cincinnati's 37-24 loss to the Detroit Lions on Sunday. He completed 26 of 40 passes for 251 yards and three touchdowns as well, but anything positive that the veteran did came when the game was essentially out of hand. In his two starts prior to the Lions loss, Browning threw for a total of 265 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions. The Bengals scored 13 points in the two games combined. Ja'Marr Chase looked extremely frustrated at times and even had a heated exchange with Taylor on the sideline. Taylor had been facing tremendous pressure from fans to make a quarterback change. It would not be a surprise if Cincinnati's front office and some players expressed a desire for Browning to be benched, as well.
49ers’ Kyle Shanahan Reveals George Kittle Development Amid NFL Season
Six-time Pro Bowl tight end George Kittle’s 2025 season for the San Francisco 49ers got off to a problematic start. The former Iowa Hawkeyes star, who produced 78 receptions for 1,106 yards and eight touchdowns last season, suffered a hamstring injury in the Niners’ season-opening win against the Seattle Seahawks and has since missed his team’s last four games. After undergoing an MRI on his hamstring, it was determined that it was going to be a multi-week injury for the two-time All-Pro TE. This forced the 49ers to place Kittle on injured reserve, meaning he would miss at least four weeks. Niners head coach Kyle Shanahan, however, revealed some good news on the Kittle front on Wednesday. Kittle has already been ruled out for Sunday’s game against Baker Mayfield and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but according to Shanahan, Kittle has a chance to return for San Francisco’s Week 7 matchup against the Atlanta Falcons (h/t Niners reporter David Lombardi of The San Francisco Standard). This is a crucial development for Kittle, who appears to be on track to make his comeback after five missed games. For the 49ers, Kittle’s imminent return boosts the team’s passing game as an added target, as well as providing elite in-line blocking against edge rushers. This news also comes at an ideal time for San Francisco as it continues to deal with multiple injuries to its star players. Quarterback Brock Purdy (toe), wide receiver Ricky Pearsall (knee), WR Jauan Jennings (ankle/rib) and WR Brandon Aiyuk (knee) are all still on the mend, while the Niners recently lost defensive end Nick Bosa to a season-ending ACL tear. Kittle’s return should serve as a psychological boost for the Niners as they try to continue building on their strong 4-1 start to the season.
Eagles receive good and bad injury news ahead of matchup with Giants
The Philadelphia Eagles are coming off one of their worst losses of the season after the Denver Broncos scored 18 unanswered points in the fourth quarter last Sunday to win 21-17. The Eagles have a short week due to playing their divisional opponent, the New York Giants, on “Thursday Night Football.” They have the opportunity to fix the problems on offense, as the Giants are one of the worst defenses (26th, 377.2 yards) in the NFL. However, the Eagles could struggle on defense, as they may also be down one of their better defensive linemen, Jalen Carter. The Eagles received one positive and one negative piece of injury news for two key players Being a short week, the Eagles have a limited amount of time to practice and formulate a game plan, but also have a limited amount of time for their players to heal after a few came out of the Eagles' loss to the Broncos battered and bruised. Running back Saquon Barkley was one of those players who wasn't 100% healthy following the loss, as he found himself on Monday's injury report and did not practice with the team due to a knee injury. Barkley taking time to rest seems to have paid off, as he was a full participant in practice as of Wednesday’s injury report. Defensive linemen Jalen Carter was a new addition to the report, as he was limited in practice due to a heel injury. Carter is currently listed as "questionable" for Thursday night's game. Eagles need both Saquon Barkley and Jalen Carter to win against the Giants Even without Carter and Barkley, the Eagles have a better roster than the Giants, but having both makes the gap even wider. Saquon is one of the best running backs in the league and has extra motivation to play the Giants, as they're his former team. In one career game against them since signing with the Eagles, Barkley ran for 176 yards on 17 carries and scored one touchdown in their matchup last October, per StatMuse. Not having a game with over 100+ yards rushing this season, Saquon could have his first one of the season against his former team, as the Giants have the 26th-ranked defense (140.0 yards) against the rush. Hopefully, Carter is available, as he is the glue that holds the Eagles' defense together. Carter is credited with playing in every game, except he was disqualified from the Eagles' season opener against the Dallas Cowboys after he spat on Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott. Carter has three solo tackles, seven assists and has not recorded a sack. If Carter can't play, the Eagles will need to rely on Jordan Davis to step up and fill in for Carter. Davis has 11 solo tackles, eight assists and a sack in five games this season. Davis will also need to pick up the slack for Carter on special teams, as the two have a blocked kick on their stat sheet against the Los Angeles Rams, which Davis ran back for a touchdown.
