The classic TV game shows, Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune are on the move this fall — and it's good news for fans.
Sony Pictures Television announced on June 3 that they've made a deal with Hulu, Peacock, and Hulu on Disney+ to stream the in-season episodes for the first time ever. It's considered a "multi-year, co-exclusive, national next-day streaming licensing deal," per Variety, and it will begin with the upcoming television season in September. The agreement also includes "library episodes" of the popular shows.
“We are thrilled to bring America’s favorite game shows to an even wider audience on Hulu, Hulu on Disney+, and Peacock,” said Keith Le Goy, Chairman of Sony Pictures Television in a statement to the media outlet. “Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune are two of the most successful game shows in television history and we look forward to giving fans the best possible streaming access to our shows this fall.”
Sony was looking to "expand Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune’s reach to a new generation of viewers" while still catering to "existing fans" who can "enjoy their favorite shows with greater accessibility, deepening the fandom overall for these formidable franchises," and that's exactly what the new deal aims to do.
Wheel of Fortune has seen tremendous success in the handover between retired host Pat Sajak and current host Ryan Seacrest. Seacrest and co-host Vanna White made the transition appear seamless. White shared how she and Seacrest worked together to put the fans — and themselves — at ease last fall.
"Obviously, it's a huge transition after working with someone for 41 years and someone new steps in," she explained to Men's Journal at Hulu's Get Real event on April 23. "But the first thing Ryan said to me was, 'I am not replacing Pat Sajak. No one can ever replace him. I'm just stepping in.' So that kind of says it all."
Wheel of Fortune is heading into its 43rd season in the fall while Jeopardy! is striding toward its 42nd season.
