'The White Lotus' stars Walton Goggins says he and Aimee Lou Wood "care about each other very deeply"

Walton Goggins and Aimee Lou Wood are clearing the air about their supposed "feud," opening up to Variety about everything from their introduction on The White Lotus set to Goggins' unfollowing his co-star on Instagram after it was all over.

"The minute she walked around the corner, I felt, 'This is gonna work,'" he recalled of their first meeting. "Two minutes into the conversation, it felt like I’ve known this person for 100 years."

The actors brought the love story between Rick and Chelsea to life in the third season of the popular HBO series. Sadly, the two didn't get their happy ending, both dying in the last episode.

"We designed the whole journey, even down to the fact that Chelsea gets on Rick in the first [love] scene. Then in the last episode, it was Rick picking Chelsea up. It was so, so delicate," Wood shared, talking about a deleted scene from the finale.

"There is no feud. I adore, I love this woman madly, and she is so important to me," Goggins expressed, ready to put the rumors to rest. "This is Goldie Hawn. This is Meg Ryan. She can do anything, and she will. You watch what the next 20 years of her experience will be. I’ll be on an island, I think Greece. But she’s special. There is no feud. She is love and I know that I am that to her. We care about each other very deeply."

The social satire is set at an exclusive Thai resort and follows the exploits of various guests and employees over the span of a week.

The actor was previously asked about the situation in an interview with The Times, but has a simple explanation for not getting into it then: "What am I gonna do, speak for both of us? Never." Not to mention, the journalist posed a question comparing his and Wood's teeth, asking if it was something they bonded over. "What he was insinuating, it was so disgusting. It was so appalling. I was flabbergasted. And I said, 'F--- mate, wow. I think we’re done here.'"

So what was the whole Instagram drama about? "I think it’s such a comment on where we’re at culturally. Why is everyone obsessing over Instagram? That is irrelevant. We don’t give a shite about Instagram," Wood expressed. "Why not have conversations about the story and Rick and Chelsea and enjoy it?"

"If I may add, just to put this to bed? The following or unfollowing. I’m a grown-a-- man," Goggins added. "When I left Justified, I went up to Tim [Olyphant], and I hugged him and I said, 'I love you, and I hope I see you in rooms for the rest of my life.' I didn’t talk to him for almost two years. I’ve done that with every single thing that I’ve done."

"My catharsis in this experience was different than other people’s, because of my history in this place. I knew what we had gone through, and I knew how close that we had gotten, and I needed to begin to process saying goodbye to Rick and Chelsea," he continued to explain, referencing how he had traveled to Thailand and Bangkok, including the exact place they filmed, after his wife died by suicide in 2004. "And I knew that that was going to take a while for me, so I let her know, this is what I’ve gotta do. And she was extremely supportive about that."

"I needed to just back away from everyone. I haven’t spoken to anyone. I couldn’t handle it. Judge me or don’t. I don’t give a f--- what you think. This is my process. Rick means everything to me, and Chelsea means everything to me. And so that’s what I needed to do for me to process all of this," he concluded before grabbing his phone and re-following the actress on social media. "It’s all so ridiculous. It’s just a part of me just saying goodbye to this character so that now Aimee and I will be friends for f----- ever."

All episodes of The White Lotus are streaming on HBO Max. The series has been renewed for a fourth season.
