Kristen Wiig joins the cast of "Masters of the Universe"

Mattel executives, buoyed by the success of “Barbie,” have been shopping their intellectual property to studios. Amazon MGM plans to release a “Masters of the Universe” movie in 2026, and the companies involved hope it performs better than the previous attempt.

The new “Masters of the Universe” film is in post-production and slated to hit theaters June 5, 2026. Travis Knight, the former animator turned live-action director best known for “Bumblebee,” widely regarded as the lone bright spot in the “Transformers” franchise, is behind the camera. He also happens to be the son of Nike co-founder Phil Knight.

The cast already includes Idris Elba, Alison Brie and Jared Leto, but a late addition is Kristen Wiig. She is voicing Roboto, the translucent, weapon-armed robot that has traditionally been portrayed by men. This time, the role is being flipped, and Wiig’s casting hints the character may lean more comedic than before.

Adding Wiig to the cast, even in a voice role, gives “Masters of the Universe” a stronger chance of connecting with audiences.
