Last week, Lana Del Rey dropped a new song, "Henry, Come On." It made it clear she was staying in the oh-so-trendy-countrified space.
The frilly, white dress and the image filter does feel more Americana than modern country, though Del Rey is no coal miner's daughter. Now, a week later, Del Rey has solidified this assertion with another song, "Bluebird."
It's all befitting a musician that is playing a country festival next week. From the finger-plucked guitar at the beginning to the languid balladeering of the vocals, there's a clear musical vision at play here. The question, though, is if these songs are leading to an imminent album release, and what the details on such an album will be.
At one point, an album called "Lasso" (If the Americana-country of it all was not going to be obvious enough) was in the mix, but then it was announced the album title was being changed to "The Right Person Will Stay." That album, such as it is, was supposed to come out May 21. Del Rey then posted on Instagram the album title was going to change again, but a new title was not given, and that it would not be out in May. Also, she then deleted said Instagram post, further muddying the waters.
Look, we've gotten two songs in roughly a week, so it's not exactly "Chinese Democracy" here. Maybe the project hasn't rounded into form as Del Rey hoped, maybe a few more album title changes are necessary before she lands on what she's looking for. For now, eyes will be kept out.
