After being off television for over a year, Larry David is back. And that’s pretty, pretty, pretty – pret-tay good! We definitely have missed all his mishaps in Curb Your Enthusiasm. Now, Larry is teaming up with some presidential power, the Obamas. And yes, it’s those Obamas – Barack and Michelle. HBO is set to run this untitled (as of yet) new comedy sketch series. The potential release date will soon be announced, but likely in 2026.

Larry David’s Brand of Comedy

Most people know Larry from either Seinfeld or Curb Your Enthusiasm. He created the long-running, iconic sitcom Seinfeld along with Jerry Seinfeld. The show was literally about… nothing. Jerry played a fictionalized version of himself, complained about almost everything, and went on daily adventures in New York with his friends Elaine, George, and Kramer.

In Curb Your Enthusiasm, which ran for 24 years, Larry David plays a fictionalized version of himself. Similarly to Seinfeld, he goes about his day-to-day activities with little regard to those around him. The insulting and often bawdy comedy and downright awkwardness paid off in the long run for the show.

The Obamas’ Production Company

What have the Obamas been doing ever since they left the White House? Well, a lot actually. One of their projects was forming Higher Ground Productions in 2018. The multi-award-winning company has produced, most famously, the movie Rustin. Rustin, starring Colman Domingo, was about the life of civil rights activist Bayard Rustin.

Higher Ground Productions, in conjunction with HBO, will be producing the Larry David and Obama project. It will be a 30-minute comedy sketch that features figures from American history. In preparation for the show, the former President quipped:

I’ve sat across the table from many of the world’s most difficult leaders and wrestled with some of our most intractable problems. Nothing has prepared me for working with Larry David.

Obamas’ and Larry David’s New Sketch Comedy  – More Details

The new project is yet to be officially titled. It will focus on American history (and yes, political figures, too). The sketch comedy will be a half-hour, likely packed with fun comedic moments and biting sarcasm. Larry says he will play “characters largely ignored by history.” Jeff Schaffer is set to direct. Producers signed on are Ethan Lewis and Vinnie Malhotra. The show will coincide with the nation’s 250th anniversary or its “semiquincentennial” celebration.

A fun fact – actually two:

Cheryl Hines, who played Cheryl David on Curb Your Enthusiasm, is actually Robert Kennedy Jr.’s real-life wife. And Larry David is a distant cousin of his lookalike, none other than the mittens-rockin’ Bernie Sanders!
