Qui-Gon Jinn’s death in Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace has broken many hearts over the years. However, Qui-Gon’s actor, Liam Neeson, seems to think a bit differently from the fans. In a recent interview, he stated that he thought the character’s death was “a bit namby-pamby.”
In a recent episode of GQ, Neeson discussed his most iconic characters, including Qui-Gon. He talked about filming the lightsaber battles, George Lucas‘s feelings about directing, and Qui-Gon’s death. Here is what he had to say about the character’s death:
“I thought my death was a bit namby-pamby. I’m supposed to be a master Jedi, you know. My character fell for that ‘oh, I’m going for your face! No, I’m going for your stomach!’ ‘Oooh, you got me!’ It’s like, oh please. Hardly a master Jedi. But still, it was great.”
It’s hard to resist making lightsaber noises during pretend battles, and that even extends to the Star Wars actors. Neeson stated that the first time he and Ewan McGregor, who played Obi-Wan Kenobi, drew their lightsabers on camera, “we both made the sound at the same time . . . George said, ‘Boys, you don’t have to do that.” It just goes to show that the thrill of holding the lightsaber can even make adults into big children.
Yes, Neeson played Qui-Gon’s ghost in the Disney+ miniseries, Obi-Wan Kenobi. He discussed his appearance in the show during the GQ interview, stating, “It was nice to recreate that, be with Ewan again after, I don’t know, eighteen, twenty years. It was sweet.” He also voiced Qui-Gon in the Star Wars animated series, Star Wars: The Clone Wars, and Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi. In addition, he had a vocal cameo in The Rise of Skywalker. Dying did not stop Qui-Gon from becoming a fan favorite. Neeson is currently starring in the reboot of The Naked Gun, and who knows, he might play Qui-Gon again sometime in the future.
