How much enthusiasm there would be for "Karate Kid: Legends" was always questionable. The last movie in the franchise came out in 2010, and would Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio move the needle? Well, the release calendar was also not kind to "Karate Kid: Legends," as the movie debuted at number three in the domestic box office. Chan and Macchio lost out to two other beloved pairings: Lilo and Stitch and Ethan Hunt and everybody's favorite character The Entity.
"Karate Kid: Legends" made $21 million domestically, which was a bit less than tracking had predicted. However, to the extent "turning a profit" is of any interest when discussing a movie's reality, "Legends" wasn't exactly a bank breaker. It cost $45 million and when all is said and done, the worldwide intake should make it a success in terms of making money. That being said, when you are the biggest new movie of the weekend and you lose to two holdover movies, you've kind of landed with a thud.
Nobody can mess with Lilo and Stitch right now, though. In its second weekend the live-action remake made a whopping $63 million domestically. The film has now brought in $280 million domestically and $610 million worldwide. With "A Minecraft Movie" topping out at close to $950 million, it's up to the small Hawaiian girl and her alien friend to try to become the first movie of 2025 to break the $1 billion mark.
Meanwhile, the last "Mission: Impossible" movie, "Final Reckoning," beat "Karate Kid" with a bit of room to spare as well. Tom Cruise's film brought in $27.3 million domestically. That has gotten it over the $100 million mark on the domestic front, and it's up to $353.8 million worldwide. That sounds great, but "Final Reckoning" cost, no joke, a reported $400 million. Factoring in marketing, "Final Reckoning" might need to double what it has made at this point to turn a profit. Yeah, good luck on that.
Speaking of $350 million, guess what movie has crossed that threshold?
"Sinners" is the standout success story of 2025 so far. It's an R-rated, original film and it is one of the biggest hits. Certainly, when you consider both commercial and critical success, "Sinners" is outpacing "Mission: Impossible" and, yes, "Lilo & Stitch." Now, if we could only get a crossover with Stitch and some vampires.
