'Love Island' host Arielle Vandenberg was 'devastated' when Season 2 winners broke up

Love Island premiered its third U.S. season last night (July 7), but Arielle Vandenberg is still mourning the breakup between Season 2 champions Caleb Corprew and Justine Ndiba.

"I was actually devastated," the show's host told People's Daryn Carp. "I was like, 'No! These people need to get married!' So, yeah, I don't know what happened there. But it makes me kind of sad. I loved them."

Speaking more broadly to why she believes all of the final couples from last season ended up in splitsville, Vandenberg had this to say:

"Do we ever know? I feel like it's so funny because we think about them in the villa, right? They don't have their phones. They don't have their friends. They don't have anything that's normal to them, and then they go back to the real world, and they're like, this is how I'm on my phone! This is the way I drive! This is the way I text! This is the way I, you know, spend my time. It's like, you get to know them on such a personal level inside the villa, and then, I don't know, once you get out of there, it's like, you're living your real life. I don't know. It's so crazy."

Season 2 aired from Aug. 24 to Sept. 30, 2020, and due to the still-threatening coronavirus pandemic, Islanders were filmed atop The Cromwell in Las Vegas rather than an exotic international destination.

Corprew and Ndiba became the first-ever Black couple winners of Love Island, including the franchise's Australian and U.K. editions of the franchise. Then still a happy couple, they shared the $100,000 prize.

They announced the end of their romance in mid-January.

Despite past fates of Love Island-bred relationships, Vandenberg is hopeful for Season 3 and everything that is possible for our new batch of Islanders, though.

"There's always surprise twists," she teased. "People are coming and going by the minute, I feel like, so there's always some kind of exciting new thing that's going on to look forward to."

The 34-year-old later added: "I can't name one other reality show that beautiful girl-power friendships come out of. That, to me, is so unique to this show. To me, when I'm watching the show, I'm like, 'Oh! They're gonna be best friends, and then they're probably gonna move in together after this!' And they do! And it's just the coolest thing to me."

Love Island USA invaded Hawaii for this season, which will air every weeknight beginning at 9 p.m. EST on CBS.
