MTV Movie & TV Awards Best Kiss winners, ranked

We're ranking this one so low because it's really retrograde! Jim and Stifler are only kissing in an attempt to kiss other characters and not out of some sort of affection the characters share for each other.

In "Untamed Heart," Christian Slater and Marisa Tomei play two restaurant workers who fall in love...except he has a heart condition. "Untamed Heart" is the first of many best kisses from a tearjerker starring attractive young actors, but this one is mostly memorable for taking place at a hockey game.

"Shakespeare In Love" won a lot of awards it wasn't expected to, and Best Kiss at the MTV Movie Awards was no exception. It beat out "Wild Things" and "Out of Sight," the latter of which has become noted as having one of the steamiest kisses in movie history.

The advertising campaign for "We're The Millers" really played up the kiss scene between Emma Roberts, Jennifer Aniston and Will Poulter, who played fake family members. But like this middling comedy, it was really only a middling kiss. 

Sarah Michelle Gellar and Selma Blair kiss in the park in "Cruel Intentions," and while the movie is a touchstone for people of a certain age, its transgressive nature hasn't really stood the test of time.

A kiss between three people?! My word. Todd Phillips' "Starsky and Hutch" is a fairly forgettable TV-to-movie adaptation, and this kiss is no exception.

The kiss in "Step Up 2: The Streets" combines two Best Kiss faves: dance romance and rain. It is a shame the dance romance genre has gone the way of the dodo.

Will Smith and Vivica A. Fox's smooch in "Independence Day" is a nice, human moment in a movie filled with planetary-scale action. For that, it's here on the list.

After taking $1 million from Robert Redford for "one night," Woody Harrelson and Demi Moore then kiss (and more) on their new pile of money, as one does. 

"Save the Last Dance" kicked off the resurgence of the romantic dance genre of movies, and it was a career highlight for Julia Stiles and Sean Patrick Thomas. It remains a weekend highlight for anyone with basic cable and no Saturday afternoon plans.

Perhaps as a nod to past winners Christian Slater and Marisa Tomei, Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort took the Golden Popcorn for the kiss between these sickly characters. Kisses should take our breath away from passion, and not because of life-threatening illnesses.

The inaugural winners of the Best Kiss Award were these two adorable moppets in 1992's "My Girl." These two have been warming the hearts of moviegoers since they shared their first kiss in this landmark young adult entry.

As a dangerous alien in "Species," Natasha Henstridge shared this memorably deadly kiss in an otherwise unmemorable sci-fi flick. Needless to say, it probably put a lot of people off kissing Natasha Henstridge for years.

Will Ferrell and Sacha Baron Cohen lock lips toward the end of "Talladega Nights" in a funny moment (Pat Benatar's "We Belong" scores the scene) in a very funny movie. Shake and bake. Shake and bake forever. 

Jim Carrey and Lauren Holly got married after making "Dumb and Dumber." Good for them! Their kiss is also pretty funny and keeps perfectly with the utter ridiculousness of the rest of the movie.

K-Stew and R-Patts won Best Kiss four years in a row for four different kisses in four different "Twilight" movies. We're lumping them all together because the story of Bella and Edward should be considered as one whole. Since these two were in a real-life relationship through making these films, we're giving them as much credit for their real-life chemistry as for the quality of these movie stars doing their jobs.

Rebel Wilson and Adam DeVine have great chemistry in the "Pitch Perfect" movies because they're both talented comedic actors. We're glad these two characters found each other.

The kiss between Simon and Bram has a lot going for it: 1) Bram just revealed himself as Blue, closing the circle of anonymous online confessions; 2) They are at the top of a Ferris Wheel; and 3) They get cheered on by their friends! Overall, this is a sweet kiss as evidenced by Keiynan Lonsdale's smile and heart-warmed giggle. But it just doesn't have the same sizzle as the previous year's winners in "Moonlight."

Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore lock lips in "The Wedding Singer" in a moment where the two characters aren't yet acting on their feelings for each other. It spurs them into action later in the movie, so it's a pretty good kiss. It also helps that it's one of the best movies either actor has done.

"Brokeback Mountain" is one of the best movies to win this award, and the real affection between the characters makes this kiss something extra. Additionally, it makes both characters' arcs more tragic and the real-life loss of Heath Ledger even sadder.

The kiss between Pat and Tiffany in "Silver Linings Playbook" is sweet and so is the movie that surrounds it. These two should really be in a fifth movie together or something.

Ashton Sanders and Jharrel Jerome occupied the teenage years in "Moonlight," a film following the three phases of Chiron — from childhood to full-fledged manhood. Chiron (Sanders) explores his sexuality as a teenager with Kevin (Jerome), his best friend. When accepting the Golden Popcorn in 2017, Sanders and Jerome dedicated it to "those who feel like the others, the misfits." "Moonlight" had also just won Best Picture at the Oscars earlier in the year.

"The Notebook" is regarded as one of the most romantic movies of the last two decades, and the kiss shared between Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams in the rain is a moment that both actors are still trying to outrun in certain circles.

This is the only kiss that immediately came to mind when thinking about the category. Spider-Man upside down kissing MJ in that rainy alley? Which one on this list is a more iconic movie moment?
