"Pee-wee's Playhouse" and "Always Sunny" star Lynne Marie Stewart passes away at 78

The television world has lost a staple of oddball entertainment. Actress Lynne Marie Stewart has passed away at the age of 78. The fact this news was evidently first confirmed by Cassandra Peterson, aka Elvira, speaks to the space she occupied in showbiz.

Stewart was a member of the famed Groundlings all the way back in the 1970s when the comedy troupe was just getting off the ground. That's where she met Peterson as well as Paul Reubens, which paved the way for her first well-remembered role.

Stewart played Miss Yvonne, aka "the most beautiful world in Puppetland," on "Pee-wee's Playhouse." This made her a Gen X favorite (and also likely paved the way for her role as Scott Aukerman's kayfabe mom on the TV version of "Comedy Bang! Bang!, as Aukerman has espoused his love for Pee-wee Herman many times over).

To later generations, and also assuredly to some Gen Xers as well, Stewart is best known as Charlie's mom on "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia." Knowing her comedic history, it makes a lot more sense that she was game for the raunchy madness of the world of Paddy's Pub. "Always Sunny" is technically an extant show, but unfortunately Stewart, and thus Charlie's mom, won't be able to be part of it going forward.

R.I.P. Lynne Marie Stewart
