Marvel is currently developing the first X-Men film set in the MCU, but apparently Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine won’t be part of it.

Despite reprising his role to widespread acclaim in Deadpool and Wolverine earlier this year, rumors are circulating he’s not being written into the script for the next X-Men reboot.

"I hear the current treatment for the MCU X-Men reboot does not include Wolverine, at all,” writes industry insider Daniel Richtman on his Patreon. If that’s true, it sounds like the film will omit the character of Wolverine altogether, rather than introduce a new actor in the role.

"Rest of the team is similar to the 'X-Men 97' cartoon plus some,” continues Richtman. “But no Wolverine because Hugh Jackman is sticking around for now. Likely even post 'Secret Wars.'"

It might be that the X-Men writers want to explore the stories of other mutants, and if Jackman was there, his presence would dominate the entire film. Besides, we’ve already been blessed with 25 years of Jackman as Wolverine. That’s enough backstory for now.

That said, we’re almost certainly going to see Wolverine in upcoming Marvel films, most notably Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. Afterall, Jackman resurrected the character for Deadpool and Wolverine, so he’s now a firm part of the MCU. It would be a waste for Marvel not to use him, even it’s for a cameo role.

In Deadpool and Wolverine, Ryan Reynolds quips Jackman is going to play his X-Men character "until he's 90.” That may be true, but if the rumors are correct, it won’t be in the next X-Men film.
