'Superman' stars David Corenswet and Nicholas Hoult had some sweet exchanges with Henry Cavill, Tyler Hoechlin, and Michael Rosenbaum

Superman stars David Corenswet and Nicholas Hoult are revealing the advice and encouragement they got from the actors who previously played their iconic DC characters.

In his signature style, James Gunn takes on the original superhero in the newly imagined DC universe with a singular blend of epic action, humor and heart, delivering a Superman who’s driven by compassion and an inherent belief in the goodness of humankind.

"I had the pleasure of exchanging letters with two previous Supermans, Henry Cavill and Tyler Hoechlin," Corenswet said during an interview with Beat 102 103. "Both of them, interestingly, sort of said in their own words, 'I'm not gonna try to give you any tips.' And I think that's a very Superman thing."

Henry Cavill tackled the role in 2013's Man of Steel, 2016's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, 2017's Justice League, and 2021's Zack Snyder's Justice League. Meanwhile, Tyler Hoechlin starred on The CW's Superman & Lois for four seasons.

"Superman's not so much for giving advice or dictating how other people should be," he continued to express. "They really just conveyed to me an encouragement and a sense of 'have fun with it,' which I think is Superman's way of doing it too."

He concluded with, "We had a lovely exchange and I'm excited to meet them one day."

As for Hoult, he connected with Smallville's Michael Rosenbaum. "Honestly, he was so kind and encouraging, and he really gave me a freedom and a confidence and a support that felt really lovely going into it," the actor explained. "He was probably the first person I saw play Luthor when I was growing up. So to get to interact with him and to chat with him beforehand was really special. I appreciate that from him, his time, but also just his encouragement meant a lot."

He then shared, "The beautiful thing he said was, 'You've got this. Go have fun. It's a, weirdly, kind of uplifting and wonderful thing to play a character that you've watched someone play and do a brilliant job at, to then have them say, 'Yeah, go get it. Go take it on.' That's a really bolstering sort of thing to happen. It was very kind of him to do that because I suppose it's a weird thing taking on a character that other people have played in some ways. Normally in acting, there's no comparisons, really, when it's a unique character, but when there's been different interpretations, then obviously people do compare."

The rest of the cast includes Rachel Brosnahan, Anthony Carrigan, Skyler Gisondo, Sara Sampaio, Mariìa Gabriela de Fariìa, Wendell Pierce, Pruitt Taylor Vince, Neva Howell, Alan Tudyk, Nathan Fillion, Edi Gathegi, and Isabela Merced.

James Gunn's Superman, DC Studios' first feature film, will be released in theaters on July 11.
