Sitcom star Malcolm-Jamal Warner is dead at the age of 54. The actor drowned while swimming at a beach in Costa Rica. Warner was pulled out into the deep waters by the current, and while he was reached eventually, he was already dead when the first responders got to him.
Warner first rose to fame playing Theo Huxtable, the only son on "The Cosby Show." The show was the biggest thing on TV, and Warner was a true TV star. He hosted "Saturday Night Live" in 1986, and he earned one Emmy nomination for his work as Theo.
After playing Theo, Warner found some success starring opposite Eddie Griffin in the UPN sitcom "Malcolm & Eddie," which ran for four seasons. In the 2000s, he had some other chances at shows, from sitcoms like "Listen Up" to dramas like "Major Crimes." We remember latter-period Warner the most from his occasional appearances on "Community." His last work of note was a handful of episodes of "9-1-1."
Warner also did some directing and made music, both playing bass guitar and doing spoken word poetry. He was married and had a child, but neither are public figures. His work can be revisited, and appreciated, and certainly a life lost way too early.
