There's no way these rom-com couples are still together

The great thing about rom-coms is that you can suspend your disbelief for an hour and a half and focus all your energy on hoping the main characters will look past any red flags and get together at the end. But when looking at them realistically, there’s no way these couples stayed together once the dust settled.

Harry and Sally, 'When Harry Met Sally…'

Harry and Sally, 'When Harry Met Sally…'
Castle Rock Entertainment

We hate to start with such an iconic couple, but Harry and Sally are definitely not together anymore. While they have lots of natural chemistry, ultimately, they were better off as friends. And they definitely stayed friends after their divorce. They’re the world’s most amicable exes.

Graham and Amanda, 'The Holiday'

Graham and Amanda, 'The Holiday'
Columbia Pictures

It pains us to write this, but Graham and Amanda are definitely not together anymore. They laid out their relationship issues before they even officially dated. Their lives are simply not compatible. Iris and Miles, on the other hand, were able to make it work. Their careers are much more flexible.

Cher and Josh, 'Clueless'

Cher and Josh, 'Clueless'
Paramount Pictures

There’s something a little odd about so badly wanting two step-siblings to get together. Despite us wanting Cher and Josh to get and stay together, this couple probably eventually realized what we all should’ve admitted from the beginning: Their relations are too close for comfort. Some obstacles just can’t be overcome.

Edward and Vivian, 'Pretty Woman'

Edward and Vivian, 'Pretty Woman'
Touchstone Pictures

We wish we could say Edward and Vivian are still together, but it’s highly implausible that they are. They were from two different worlds, and Vivian was never going to feel truly accepted in Edward’s. Once the shine of a new relationship wore off, Vivian and Edward split.

Phil and Rita, 'Groundhog Day'

Phil and Rita, 'Groundhog Day'
Columbia Pictures

Phil and Rita falling in love is nice in theory, but in reality, Phil is unhappy, and not even a relationship is going to change that. He didn’t need a time loop in a small town in Pennsylvania. He needed therapy. Rita was too good for him, and she realized it as soon as she got back to the city.

Paulie and Juno, 'Juno'

Paulie and Juno, 'Juno'
Mandate Pictures

While Paulie and Juno were adorable together and should be commended for their efforts at a relationship for the sake of their child, in the end, they knew it just wasn’t right. They remained incredible co-parents, and the kid had a very happy upbringing.

Pat and Tiffany, 'Silver Linings Playbook'

Pat and Tiffany, 'Silver Linings Playbook'
The Weinstein Company

Pat and Tiffany weren’t quite star-crossed lovers, but they were close. They had too much attraction and tension not to give a relationship a shot, but both had too many personal battles to face to make things work. In another life, they would’ve been perfect for each other.

Bridget and Mark, 'Bridget Jones’s Diary'

Bridget and Mark, 'Bridget Jones’s Diary'
Universal Pictures

Unlike most rom-com couples, we actually got to see how Bridget and Mark’s relationship played out, thanks to its sequel. But it didn’t take a sequel to know they would eventually break up. And break up again, they did. A baby doesn’t save a relationship.

Andie and Ben, 'How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days'

Andie and Ben, 'How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days'
Paramount Pictures

Some couples can know they’re meant to be within 10 days, but it’s rare and didn’t happen with Andie and Ben. Any relationship that’s built on deceit is bound to fail. Not even an epic performance of “You’re So Vain” and a massive diamond necklace can change that.

Sam and Annie, 'Sleepless in Seattle'

Sam and Annie, 'Sleepless in Seattle'
TriStar Pictures

As we mentioned, some red flags are too giant to ignore, even in a Nora Ephron movie. Sam and Annie lived on opposite sides of the country, and they didn’t know each other. If someone heard your story on the radio and tracked you down, you’d assume it was a stalker, not a hopeless romantic. Sam and Annie had no chance of making it work.

Karen and Harry, 'Love Actually'

Karen and Harry, 'Love Actually'
StudioCanal

Of all the Love Actually couples, Karen and Harry are the most realistic, making their story even more heartbreaking. The writing was on the wall when Karen and the kids picked Harry up from the airport at the movie's end. She was miserable and unable to forgive him for his discretions. It took Karen some time, but she eventually moved on.

Joe and Kathleen, 'You’ve Got Mail'

Joe and Kathleen, 'You’ve Got Mail'
Lauren Shuler Donner Productions

The sentiment behind Joe and Kathleen’s love story was sweet, but these two were fundamentally different people. As much as they wanted their relationship to work, they were too strong in their convictions to compromise. A romantic relationship between the two of them was doomed from the start.

Margaret and Andrew, 'The Proposal'

Margaret and Andrew, 'The Proposal'
Touchstone Pictures

Margaret and Andrew were better off friends than lovers. Something about them just didn’t fit. Their relationship didn’t last long, but they kept up appearances until Margaret was in the clear with immigration. Once she was able to live in the States without an American spouse, she and Andrew divorced.

Zack and Laney, 'She’s All That'

Zack and Laney, 'She’s All That'
Tapestry Films

It’s every girl's fantasy to have the guy she’s eyeing realize how beautiful and special she is, but if it takes a complete makeover for him to be interested, he’s probably not the kind of guy worthy of a relationship. Laney realized this once she left high school, and she left Zack behind for someone genuinely interested.

Dylan and Jamie, 'Friends With Benefits'

Dylan and Jamie, 'Friends With Benefits'
Screen Gems

Relationships that begin as friends are often very stable, but Dylan and Jamie had too much to figure out on their own before they could make a relationship work. Plus, a flash mob is the absolute worst grand romantic gesture possible. No one should be flattered by a flash mob.

Danny and Sandy, 'Grease'

Danny and Sandy, 'Grease'
Allan Carr Enterprises

Most high school relationships don’t last, even the ones marked by a meet-cute at the beach and iconic musical numbers. Danny had lots of shaping up to do, and when Sandy returned to her wholesome demeanor after their car landed, she realized she didn’t have the time or the patience to coach her boyfriend into becoming an adult.

Gracie and Eric, 'Miss Congeniality'

Gracie and Eric, 'Miss Congeniality'
Fortis Films

Gracie and Eric had the same issues as Laney and Zack — a makeover can’t be the basis of a relationship. Once they returned to normal working conditions, Gracie returned to her true self and realized Eric’s attraction was only surface-level. She’s too level-headed to stay in a relationship like that.

Chris and Jamie, 'Just Friends'

Chris and Jamie, 'Just Friends'
Cinerenta

There’s no way Chris and Jamie were able to make their relationship work past the holiday season. Chris returned to Los Angeles, and Jamie stayed in Jersey. Once the magic of the season wore off, Chris realized he was a different guy than he was in high school, and he and Jamie weren’t meant to be.

Duke and Viola, 'She’s the Man'

Duke and Viola, 'She’s the Man'
DreamWorks Pictures

Again, high school relationships usually don’t last, and Duke and Viola were no exception. Despite their mutual love for soccer, once high school ended, so did their relationship. Eunice and Toby stayed together, though.

Nyles and Sarah, 'Palm Springs'

Nyles and Sarah, 'Palm Springs'
Limelight Productions

Wanting Nyles and Sarah to get together was purely out of proximity. There was no one else for either of them to be with. Once they escaped the loop, Sarah realized how devious his lie was and that she had formed an attachment to Nyles purely out of necessity. She had to leave him.
