Disaster movies are back, and they're making an impact at the box office as this weekend's big opener was the Glen Powell and Daisy Edgar-Jones-led Twisters from director Lee Isaac Chung.
The $80.5 million domestic opening makes it the biggest opening weekend ever for a disaster film and the second biggest for a live-action film this year, as per Discussing Film.
On top of this, Twisters also made an additional $42.7 million at the international box office, for a worldwide total of $123.2 million.
It's an impressive opening for the reboot, taking inspiration from Jan de Bont's Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton-led Twister.
When de Bont's film hit theaters in 1996, it took $41 million domestically during its opening weekend, which – with inflation – matches the figure we saw this weekend for Twisters.
Twister went on to gross $494.5 million worldwide, which equates to $990.3 million in 2024.
Does this mean Twisters is on the same path for success? It's hard to tell, but the film is certainly making a splash among Millennial and Gen-Z audiences who grew up watching Twister and even just those who want to see what Hollywood's latest heartthrob – Glen Powell – delivers in this role.
Audiences are loving what they're seeing because Twisters sits with a 92% audience score for now against a Certified Fresh critics score of 72%. However, there's an ongoing dispute right now, with people asking the question: Why is there no kissing in Twisters?
