Watch: 'Grey's Anatomy' promo teases 'McDreamy' return next week

Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) seemed to turn a corner over the course of Grey's Anatomy's last few episodes, but Thursday night's promo clip for Season 17's thirteenth episode cautions that the iconic titular character is not quite out of the woods from her severe case of COVID-19 that rendered her unconscious and placed her on a ventilator.

While this is very concerning, the good news is that a return to Meredith's "in-between beach" means we get more posthumous Derek "McDreamy" Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey):

The 30-second teaser begins with Teddy (Kim Raver) and Webber (James Pickens Jr.) looked over Meredith laying unconscious in her Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital bed.

"Meredith's X-rays have shown a remarkable improvement," Teddy says.

"She should be awake," Webber wonders. "Why isn't she?"

That takes us back to the beach, where Meredith's spirit has been living between life and death since she first contracted the virus earlier this season. Derek, her husband that died way back in Season 11 nearly exactly six years ago, first visited her there in this season's two-part premiere. This time, he reminds her that people love her and need her.

"I'm tired," she says.

"You're still fighting," he says.

Up to this point on the beach, their two beings have not "physically touched"—or whatever the equivalent to that is in a dream-like state—and Meredith expresses again that she wants Derek "closer." He reminds her the dangers of that, and she's aware that if she does get closer to him, "I'll never leave."

That becomes an especially monumental cliffhanger when the clip ends with Derek standing closely behind Meredith. Are they touching? Does he get as close as he can without actually touching her? What does all of this mean for Meredith? Is she going to fight to stay alive and return to the cast or give into to her urge to let go and be with Derek again in the afterlife? And if that's the case, does Grey's have a future beyond this season?!

We'll have to wait until next Thursday (April 22) to see if any of those questions will be answered.

In the meantime, head over here for a full recap of this week's "Sign O' the Times" episode.
