Ferrari had a nightmare of an outing at the Dutch GP right after coming out of the summer break. The Italian constructor had bought in some upgrades to the car and hoped for better races ahead. However, both Ferrari drivers in Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton, suffered from a DNF as the team walked out of the weekend with zero points and two damaged cars. Now, Fred Vasseur has taken a sly dig at Hamilton and his incident to be the cause behind Leclerc’s woeful ending as well.

Lewis Hamilton was looking positive at the Dutch GP, especially after coming back from the emotional summer break. The Qualifying sessions were insignificant for both drivers as they just qualified in P6 and P7, with Hamilton trailing Charles Leclerc. Hence, both drivers already had a lot of pending work just to move up the pecking order and score good points.

Lewis Hamilton lost control of his car and crashed into the barriers heading out of Turn 3, and ultimately classified the race as DNF. Meanwhile, Charles Leclerc came out of his pit stop just a lap before Hamilton’s incident. As such, this caused the Monegasque to lose crucial track positions behind the safety car, as other drivers pit easily under the safety car.

Charles Leclerc was then stuck in the midfield right before Kimi Antonelli crashed into him and caused the former to DNF from the race as well. Hence, Fred Vasseur insisted that Leclerc’s pace was good enough to achieve a podium finish. Vasseur hinted that Hamilton’s crash, which happened right after Leclerc’s pit stop, did not help the team’s case at all.

Charles’s pace today was good and enough to get him onto the podium, I think. But overall, it went very badly. When Lewis had his accident, it happened the lap after Charles’s pit stop, so the Safety Car came out, and we lost a couple of positions.

Fred Vasseur expects ‘better shape’ at the upcoming Italian GP

Ferrari must put forth their A-game at their home race at Monza. The team’s current pace does not look promising as they still need to work hard on the car. Regardless of the disappointing pace, Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton are giving it their all to perform well, no matter the adversities. As such, Fred Vasseur laid out his ambitions to come up to the home race with better performance.

Fred Vasseur pointed out that he and Ferrari expected to come up in a better shape at the Italian GP as compared to the Dutch GP. Vasseur insisted that the team’s race pace was good enough and comparable to Max Verstappen, but not with the McLarens. Regardless, the Frenchman highlighted that it will be crucial for Ferrari to start the weekend well, right from Friday.

We expect to be in better shape than we were here. Although the pace was good, but not comparable to the McLarens. It was comparable to Max’s. But it will be very important for us to start well from Friday.

Fred Vasseur noted

Following the double DNF in Zandvoort, Ferrari is leading the runner-up spot by just 12 points over Mercedes. The German carmaker has been more consistent in the recent races and can snub the Scuderia from the P2 spot in the constructors’ standings soon enough. So, it is crucial for Maranello to bounce back stronger and hold onto its spot in the pecking order.
