There really is a holiday for just about anything. Traditionally, the final Thursday of June is National Handshake Day. How you go about commemorating this special event is up to you, but you may want to think twice before you go grabbing the hands of strangers on the street.
In sports, opponents shaking hands before, during and after encounters is a time-honored tradition and a show of respect and, in some cases, admiration. We also routinely witness teammates offer similar greetings to each other following victories or difficult defeats. Intense rivalries run deep across sports, but the hope, for the most part, is that all animosity between the athletes ends after the final whistle.
