They’re still around.

The UConn Huskies aren’t ripping through teams like they did over the previous two NCAA Tournaments, but they cranked up the defense in a gut-check 67-59 win over Oklahoma to keep on moving. They’re really flawed, but they’re still really good.

Florida ran a solid scrimmage and got its sweat on in a 95-69 win over Norfolk State, and now it gets one whale of a test. Let’s just say it would’ve much rather have dealt with Oklahoma - it beat the Sooners 85-63 in the SEC regular season

Get past this, and the Maryland-Colorado State winner is up next in the Sweet 16.

Why UConn Will Win

Again, it has to keep being said - this isn’t last year’s team, and it’s definitely not the 2023 version once the tournament hit. But it’s still big, it still blocks everything, and Oklahoma got hit with the full force of the defensive pressure when it mattered.

The Huskies still outrebound everyone - 41-34 against the Sooners - and they’re usually far better from the free throw line than they were Friday night. Florida also has the size, rebounding ability, and inside presence. It’s not nearly as good on the free throw line, but …

Why Florida Will Win

The Huskies don’t run like Florida does.

When UConn was humming, defensive stop, rebound, fire it out, two points - and it all happened in a blink, and it all turned into a run that turned the lights out.

It can still do that once in a while, but it’s not nearly as dangerous or effective. Florida has become all of that with a devastating way of turning stops into points on the way to a massive scoring burst.

UConn’s problem now is that it struggles to keep up with the points start to fly. There are too many turnovers, too many empty trips, and in this there will be too many chances for the Gators to jump over mistakes.

Florida vs UConn: Who Will Win?

After the win over Oklahoma, the Huskies are now 15-0 when holding teams to under 68 points and 8-10 when they don’t. How many times has Florida been kept under 68?

Once - the crazy 64-44 loss to Tennessee. It won’t happen twice, but UConn will have a few moments deep into the second half when it seems like it has the old magic back. And then the two big turnovers will come, and Florida will get control from there.
