Daniil Medvedev for a second consecutive Grand Slam has been defeated by Benjamin Bonzi with the Russian losing out 6-3, 7-5, 6-7, 0-6, 6-4. But it was in the end his meltdown on court that courted all the US Open headlines.
A US Open photographer encroached onto court while Bonzi was on match point when he was forced to halt his serve before hitting a second serve when a photographer appeared side of the court in anticipation of the match conluding.
Greg Allensworth then awarded a first serve to Bonzi which saw Medvedev explode with rage. "Wait please, not now. Get off the court please," umpire Greg Allensworth told the photographer.
"Are you a man? Are you a man? Why are you shaking? What's wrong, huh?" Medvedev said, arguing that the photographer in this case didn't inconvenience Bonzi only him.
"What did Reilly Opelka say? He earns by the match, not by the hour. Umpire just wants to go home." He then screamed: "What did Reilly Opelka say?" three times as he continued to rile up the crowd. He escaped without a code violation.
But what did he say. Earlier this year Opelka called for him to be suspended by the ATP after receiving a code violation at the Dallas Open when attempting to tell a fan to be quiet. 'He's real bad," Opelka said when asked about Allensworth. "He almost changed the outcome of that match just because he doesn't really know what he's doing. He got emotional when we were arguing.
"He got very tense and frantic, he couldn't give me an answer. He didn't tell that guy to shut up, he was doing it for three points. He didn't do his job, so I had to tell him, 'Get out of here.' The guy was being pretty quite rude."
Medvedev won the tiebreak as a result of this incident he then won the fourth set 6-0 but ran out of legs in the decider to lose again to the Frenchman but it was this moment that courted the headlines as well as obliterating one of his rackets in frustration post match. He also believed that he is set for a big fine come what may. "I'm getting a big enough fine so if I speak I'm in big trouble so I'm not gonna speak. Not everyone knows what I'm talking about when I said Reilly. Reilly got fined big time for this so I'm gonna get a big fine too."
"I have no idea they fine guys like me much more than other guys... Kyrgios, me, Bublik, who else? Reilly. Even if Reilly's a nice guy and they fine him just because they don't like him." As well as that he wasn't upset with the photographer more the umpires decision in the situation. "I was not upset with the photographer… it was nothing special. Every time there’s a sound from the stands between serves, there is never a second serve. But well, that helped me get back into the match. It was a fun moment to live. I wasn’t upset with the photographer. I was upset with the decision.”
