2026 Transactions: Athletics Claim Bigge, Blue Jays DFA Sanchez

It’s been a tough year for the Athletics. However, one hidden perk was that the club was able to add a high-octane arm through waivers on September 11. Hunter Bigge, formerly on waivers, was claimed off waivers. Additionally, the Blue Jays cut Jesús Sanchez.

Athletics claim reliever

The Athletics claimed reliever Hunter Bigge off waivers from the Rays. Tampa Bay designated Bigge for assignment several days earlier.

It’s not a shock to see Bigge get claimed. The 28-year-old has a big arm, highlighted by a fastball that can touch the triple digits, plus a slider that was used regularly to play off it. However, control has been an issue.

Bigge walked 20 over 29.1 IP with Triple-A Durham in 2026.

Sanchez cut, Martin Jr. up

The Blue Jays designated outfielder Jesús Sanchez for assignment.

Sanchez was acquired back in February by the Blue Jays, at a time when the club needed a veteran bat in the outfield. However, a perfect storm, headlined by the resurgence of Brett Bateman and a pending return of Anthony Santander, put him in a tight spot.

What also didn’t help was the fact that Sanchez did not hit well over the past six weeks. Dating back to August 1, Sanchez slashed .212/333/.346 over 63 plate appearances.

Rudy Martin Jr. was selected by the Blue Jays to take Sanchez’s place on the roster.

Recalls & options

DaShawn Keirsey Jr. (Braves), Anthony Seigler (Red Sox), Jack Weisenburger (Mets), Bradley Hanner (Yankees), and Mason McCoy (Padres) were recalled.

Jasson Dominguez (Yankees) and Ronny Simon (Pirates) were optioned.

Other notes

The Mets designated reliever Chris Devenski for assignment.

Mariners outfielder Stuart Fairchild was sent outright to Triple-A.
