The New York Yankees’ window to win a World Series led by Aaron Judge is dwindling, so as usual, we can once again expect them to be aggressive buyers ahead of this year’s August 3 trade deadline.
A typically competitive American League is wide open for the taking, with the Tampa Bay Rays as the only real threat to their pursuit of winning the AL East and landing the No. 1 seed.
There are various areas of the roster you could argue the Yankees need to focus on improving; however, Chris Rose of Baseball Today believes the bullpen should be the priority, and he’s predicting they do so by swinging for the fences and trading for superstar closer Mason Miller.
“My prediction is that Mason Miller gets traded for the second straight year. And he is going coast-to-coast and will try and bolster the bullpen of the New York Yankees in a major deal. The Padres are going to need more offensive help that is major league ready… I know the Yankees feel like they are a legit bona fide closer away from winning this thing,”
The 27-year-old Miller is playing on the one-year, $4 million contract he settled on with the San Diego Padres to avoid arbitration this winter. He’s been dominant so far in 2026, currently sporting a 0.72 ERA with 17 saves and a 17.64 K/9 across 25 innings pitched.
San Diego is currently the top wild-card team in the NL, which adds even more intrigue to this proposal. Rose’s argument is that the Padres are so desperate for offense that they could move Miller to acquire multiple young bats while still maintaining a strong bullpen, which is certainly the case.
For New York, it’s all about the here and now, and adding a 100-plus mph flamethrower to the mix would absolutely help that cause, no matter what young players or prospects it takes to get a deal done.
Is such a deal likely to happen? Probably not, but AJ Preller is never shy about making a blockbuster, which makes it well worth Brian Cashman at least exploring the possibility.
