More positive injury news has arrived for the Toronto Blue Jays, and they can use every ounce of it right now.
Prior to Thursday’s 2-1 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers, manager John Schneider provided an encouraging update on George Springer (left big toe fracture), who has resumed baseball activities while on the road with the team. He’s begun hitting in the cages again, swinging off a tee and light flips from the coaching staff, per Sportsnet’s Arden Zwelling.
Springer has yet to resume running the bases, which he’s expected to do early next week. If all goes well, the 36-year-old designated hitter could be activated off the 10-day injured list upon returning home ahead of next Friday’s series opener versus the Cleveland Guardians.
George Springer (toe) has resumed swinging in the visitors batting cages in Milwaukee; taking flips and hitting off a tee for now.
Running will be his biggest test. But it’s possible Springer’s ready to be activated from IL around beginning of Blue Jays homestand next Friday.

Schneider also confirmed that Springer won’t require a rehab assignment if everything checks out during his pitching machine sessions against high-velocity fastballs. The team has felt encouraged by his progress and believes his swing is already close to returning to 100 percent.
There’s also optimism that Addison Barger (left ankle) isn’t too far away either, now that he’s resumed activities down in Dunedin, Fla., at the club’s player development complex, according to Schneider. He’s spent the last few days playing catch and is scheduled to participate in hitting drills this weekend.
After that, Barger hopes to test both his ankles when he resumes running on Tuesday or Wednesday next week. That’ll help determine how the organization approaches his recovery timeline moving forward.
Reinserting both Springer and Barger back into the Blue Jays’ lineup as soon as possible will be crucial after this struggling offence just scored two runs total in as many days versus the Brewers to conclude a fifth straight series loss.
