The Boston Red Sox closed out a successful series against the San Francisco Giants on Sunday with a revised starting lineup that left one of their regular outfielders on the bench.
Manager Chad Tracy decided to rest Jarren Duran after the speedy outfielder started the first two games of the set at Fenway Park. Duran collected a pair of hits in Friday’s contest but went hitless in three at-bats during Saturday’s extra-inning victory.
That 3-2 win, sealed by a ninth-inning rally, gave the Red Sox a 2-0 lead in the series heading into the finale. Tracy responded by inserting Eli White into left field while keeping Ceddanne Rafaela in center and Wilyer Abreu in right.
The full Sunday lineup, as shared by Underdog MLB, read: “Red Sox 8/23 J. Jones DH C. Rafaela CF W. Abreu RF W. Contreras 1B C. Durbin 3B N. Sogard 2B A. Monasterio SS E. White LF C. Wong C J. Bennett SP.”
Duran’s absence from the starting nine comes at a time when his overall numbers have lagged behind expectations. Through 121 games and 511 at-bats this season, the left-handed hitter is batting .207 with 58 runs scored, 96 hits, 17 home runs and 62 RBIs. His slugging percentage sits at .363 and his on-base-plus-slugging mark is .628.
Two years earlier, Duran earned his first All-Star nod and took home Most Valuable Player honors from the midsummer classic. Those accomplishments raised hopes that he would develop into a consistent everyday contributor in Boston’s outfield.
Instead, the 2026 campaign has raised questions about his long-term role with the club. With prospect Roman Anthony progressing through a minor-league rehabilitation assignment, the Red Sox could soon have another talented option available. That development may push Duran into more of a platoon situation as the season winds down.
Tracy has not publicly detailed the exact reasoning behind Sunday’s move, but the decision aligns with a broader effort to keep the roster fresh during a competitive stretch. The Red Sox entered the day with a 70-59 record, positioning them among the stronger clubs in the American League.
After wrapping up the Giants series, Boston turns its attention to a road trip that begins Monday in Miami against the Marlins. From there, the club heads north for a series against the New York Yankees in the Bronx later next week.
Those matchups will offer further opportunities to evaluate how Tracy deploys his outfielders. White’s inclusion in the Sunday lineup gives the manager a chance to assess the veteran’s contributions in a starting capacity, while Rafaela and Abreu continue to provide steady production in the middle and right-field spots.
Duran remains available off the bench, and his speed and defensive range could still prove valuable in late-game situations. For now, the focus stays on the series finale and the potential for another tight contest against San Francisco.
The Red Sox have shown resilience in recent weeks, grinding out close victories and staying in the thick of the playoff picture. Maintaining that momentum will depend in part on how effectively the coaching staff balances rest and performance among key players such as Duran.
As Anthony nears a possible return, the outfield picture could shift further. Until then, Tracy appears content to mix and match based on recent results and matchup considerations. Sunday’s lineup change is the latest example of that approach.
Fans at Fenway and those following the team closely will watch to see whether Duran reclaims a starting role in the coming days or settles into a more limited role for the remainder of the regular season.
The next few series should provide clearer answers.
