No player from the Chicago Cubs' 2016 World Series champion roster remains with the organization in 2025.
The best Cubs players from 2016 included shortstop Javier Baez, third baseman Kris Bryant, and first baseman Anthony Rizzo. All three were traded at the deadline in 2021.
The last player to depart was starting pitcher Kyle Hendricks, who signed a one-year, $2.5 million contract with the Los Angeles Angels during the winter. He threw 7.1 shutout innings in his final start as a Cub last September 28 at Wrigley Field in a 3-0 win over the Cincinnati Reds. He left the field to a standing ovation from the crowd.
Hendricks spent the first 11 years of his MLB career with the Cubs, from 2014 to 2024. At his best, Hendricks was one of the best starting pitchers in the National League, fooling hitters with a nasty changeup.
The 35-year-old led MLB with a 2.13 ERA in 31 games in 2016. He maintains excellent command, walking just 2.1 batters per nine innings in his career.
After signing with the Angels, Hendricks spoke with Zoe Grossman of the Marquee Sports Network, saying he will always cherish his time with the Cubs in Chicago.
"Chicago will always be so special in my heart," Hendricks told Grossman. "It's family."
Hendricks often dominated the St. Louis Cardinals on the mound during his time with the Cubs. He posted a 2.72 ERA in 27 starts against the NL Central Division rivals.
On Tuesday, the righty continued his exceptional play against the Cardinals, allowing two earned runs on seven hits with four strikeouts in six innings in the Angels' 9-7 11-inning win at Busch Stadium in St. Louis, Missouri.
Potentially nearing the end of his career, Hendricks is unlikely to wear a Cubs uniform again. However, there's a good chance he will make appearances at Wrigley Field after his playing days.
