The Detroit Tigers wrap up their three-game series against the Kansas City Royals on Sunday afternoon, hoping to avoid a sweep after dropping the first two contests.
Saturday’s 3-1 defeat left the Tigers searching for answers as they try to climb back into contention in the American League Central. While the club focuses on the series finale, team officials provided a fresh update on outfielder Riley Greene, who has been sidelined since Aug. 11.
Greene has been working through his recovery process away from the big-league club.
MLB.com reported on Aug. 21: “Completing a running, hitting and defense progression at team facility in Lakeland, Fla. Will be back in Detroit on Aug. 24 to continue baseball activity. Expected to require longer than minimum IL stint.”
Officials indicated the outfielder remains on track for a possible return sometime before the end of August or early in September.
Before the injury forced him to the injured list, Greene posted a .273 batting average with 115 hits, 16 home runs, 54 RBIs, 65 runs scored and three stolen bases across 117 games. The 25-year-old is in the middle of his fifth major league season, all spent with the Tigers organization.
Greene has earned All-Star selections in each of the past three seasons, establishing himself as one of the club’s most consistent offensive threats. Last season he launched 36 home runs and drove in 111 runs, numbers that underscored his growing power and production.
Detroit currently sits in fourth place in the AL Central with a 61-68 record through 129 games. The Tigers have struggled lately, going 2-8 over their past 10 contests and finding themselves six games behind the division-leading Chicago White Sox.
Meanwhile, the Royals occupy last place in the same division at 57-74 after 131 games. Kansas City has shown recent momentum, posting an 8-2 mark in its last 10 outings and capitalizing on opportunities against Detroit.
Greene’s absence has been felt in the Tigers’ lineup, where his ability to hit for average and power has been a steadying presence. Manager and coaching staff have stressed patience with the recovery timeline while the team continues its push through the final stretch of the regular season.
Fans in Detroit are eager for the outfielder’s return, hoping his bat can help spark a late-season surge. The Tigers will need contributions from multiple players if they hope to close the gap in the standings before the calendar turns to September.
Sunday’s series finale offers an immediate chance to stop the current skid and build some positive momentum heading into the next stretch of games.
Greene’s progress in Lakeland and subsequent return to Detroit will be closely monitored by the organization in the coming days.
